RELIEF MONEY INVOLVED j WORKERS’ DENIALS [PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] ■WAIPUKURAU, December 14. On remand, Herbert Monteroy Tansley, formerly town clerk of Waipukurau, and Chrian Mathieson Gronn, relief worker, arrested on November 16, appeared before Mr B. J. McCormick, J.P., charged on two counts of theft, of sums totalling £164 5/3, the property of the Government, arising from admiriistifation of the unemployment relief. Eleven relief workers are being called to give evidence. DetectiveSergt. W. Bickerdike, of Napier, appeared for the police. The charges were that about July 7 last and to November 3, they did steal a total of £B7/11/3; and also about January 13 to June 30, a total of £76 14/-. L. E. Hanson stated that since December 9 he had been employed by the Waipawa Hospital Board. For two years, prior, he was employed by the District High School Committee and Borough Council on relief work. The signatures L. E. Hanson on the wages sheet and book of the Borough at various dates and the zamounts detailed, were not his (the total was £8). He had not given authority to anyone to sign on his behalf and had not received the monies. The last pay from the Borough was drawn prior to December 9, since when he was not on relief. E. A. .Baigent said that for two years he had been on and off relief. The signatures B. A. Baigent in the Borough wages sheet were not his. The total was £l4. He had not received such monies. All payments for relief work ho received at and signed for at the Council office. (Jroceeding.) '
