BABY KICKS £lO5 AWAY. MELBOURNE, November 27. A playful kick by their baby, aged 15 weeks, almost deprived an unemployed man and his wife of £lO5, portion of a legacy, to-day. After they had obtained the monejj from a solicitor, and paid their debts, Mr. Leslie Scully and his wife were returning home along Clarendon-street, South Melbourne, when, unnoticed by the parents, the infant kicked the money from its perambulator. So distressed was Mr. Scully wheiuhe discovered the loss that he collapsed. Most of the money was recovered later, but £lO was missing. For several years the couple had been living in unfortunate circumstances. Then a few days ago, they learned that the last payment (amounting to £124) of a. legacy from Airs. Scully's late uncle was available for collection. Their first act after reccing tiie money was to pay several debts, including arrears of rent, amounting to £9 14s. Happy in. a I'ecling of new-found security and freedom, Airs. Scully, as she thought, placed the money in her bag. Actually, the bundle of notes fell into the ; perambulator, and, before they had walked far. a kick by their baby daughter sent the money rolling across the footpath. Unaware ct their loss, the couple walked some distance. Then Airs. Scully glanced into her bag. and saw that the money was missing. In a few minutes, a crowd of nearly 200 persons surrounded the dazed couple. A constable sain mo nod an ambulance. but Air. Scully recovered before it arrived. A woman in the crowd handed him a bundle of notes, which had been found, but, on counting it, Air. Scully found •that £lO had disappeared.
