Mrs. George Allen of Roa, who entered the hospital for further treatment is progressing favourably.

The promotion is announced of Squadron Leader Wilkes, Director of Air Services, to the rank of Wing Commander. —Press Assn.

Mrs. H. E. Harvey returned on Saturday from a visit to the North Island and Christchurch.

A cablegram announced the death, at Belfast, of James AV. Pyle, a Senator for Northern Ireland.

The engagement is announced of John Barraud, son of Mr and Mrs Walter Blundell, and Marjorie Lloyd, youngest daughter of Dr and Mrs Charles Morice, Wellington.

Notice of his transfer to Rarotonga has been received by Mr. R. L. Horn, supervisor at the Hokitika Post Office. Mr. and Mrs. Horn will sail on December 24.

Passengers by Saturday’s express from Christchurch included: Dr. W. McKay, Mr. C. Dewar and Mrs. Dewar senr., Miss G. Robinson, Mr. T. James, Mrs. C. Johnstone.

The death is announced from Sydney, of Captain Leonard John Burkitt, aged 62, who was chief mate on the steamer Elingamite, which was wrecked on the Three Kings, off the New Zealand coast in 1902.

The Stratford Hospital Board has appointed Dr William Brown, of Dunedin, as Medical Superintendent, from January 1 next. The DirectorGeneral of Health complimented the Board on the high standard of applications received. —Press Assn.

A Sydney cablegram -stated that the liner Wanganella, which on Saturday sailed at midnight for Auckland, carries among her passengers Mr Malcolm MacDonald, M.P., and his sis Fer, Miss Sheila MacDonald, and the British Grenadier Guards Band.

Mr. W. D. Coulter, of the Railway Department, Greymouth, left this morning, on transfer to Ikamatua. He was farewelled by the members of the Choir of St. Patrick’s Church, yesterday, and presented with a prayer book. The presentation was made by the Conductor, Mr. J. Wood, and Mr. Coulter suitably replied.

Miss M. Clarke, of Runanga, whose marriage will take place shortly, was, on Saturday evening, met by the management and staff of Messrs. Schaef’s Ltd., and made the recipient of several gifts. The presentations were made by tho manager, Mr. Guido Schaef, who expressed regret at the retirement of Miss Clarke, but. extended to her the best wishes of all for hei’ future good health and happiness. Miss Clarke suitably responded.

The death occurred, at Lyall Bay, Wellington, last Friday, of Mrs. D. Baillie, mother of Mr. F. W. Baillie, of Greymouth. The late Mrs. Baillie is survived by her husband; three sons. Frederick (Greymouth), Norman (Rangiora), Walter (Hastings): and four daughters, Mesdames Deans (Wariganui), Wiseman (Wellington), I. Black. (Wellington), and Miss A. 'Baillie (Wellington).

Full Air Force honours were accorded the late Flying-Officer C. C. Waite, who was killed as a result of an aerial collision at Te Aroha, when the funeral took place at Karori Cemetery, Wellington, on Saturday afternoon. In addition to relatives and many personal friends, the cortege included practically a full representation of Wellington Aero Club, representatives of Te Aroha Aero Club; the Director of Air Services, Wing Commander Wilkes, SquadronLeader Stedman (officer commanding No. 2 Squadron, to which deceased was attached), Flight-Lieutenant Nisbet (representing the officer commanding the New Zealand Air Force). The services at the mortuary chapel and the graveside were conducted by Canon Percival James.—Press Assn.
