Mrs A. Izzard returned by Saturday’s express from Christchurch.
Mrs F. Wylde, Runanga, returned from Christchurch, on Saturday.
Mrs J. J. Connor will leave by tomorrow’s express, on her return, to Hawke’s Bay.
Mrs J. Darwell, who underwent an operation at Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch, last week, will return by te-morrow’s express.
The wedding will take place at St Patrick’s Church, Greymouth, on Wed nesday, of Miss Grace O’Brien, oi Stillwater, and Mr Leo O’Malley, oi the Railway Department, Greymouth
Rev. R. Hodgson, of Waerengaahika, Gisborne, who conducted a Mission at Holy Trinity Church, Greymouth, last year, has been appointed vicar of Rotorua, in succession to Archdeacon Chatterton.
Mrs H. Cartney, of Wanganui, arrived on Saturday, to attend the wedding of Miss Alma Ryan, and Mr J. J. McDonald, which will take place at St. Patrick’s Church, Greymouth, on Thursday.
Mr. J. A. Lyons has sufficiently recovered as to be able to leave St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, and has returned to Canberra, where he possibly will take part in the trade and shipping discussions with the New Zealand delegation, Messrs Coates and Masters.
Very Rev. Father J. Long, Adm., of St. Patrick’s Church, will leave to-mor-row, for Melbourne, to attend the Australian National Eucharistic Congress, which will commence next month. He will be tendered a farewell social by the parishioners at St. Columba Hall, this evening.
A Press Association message from Christchurch reported the death of Mr Daniel Connelly, single, 65, formerly a Detective-Sergeant. He was one of the two detectives who arrested the murderer, Eggers, following the highway robbery on the West Coast. Since his retirement, seven years ago, deceased had been employed by the Racing Conference.
Very Rev. A. L. Burger, S.M., M.A., Rector of St. Bede’s College, will, on Wednesday next, celebrate the silver jubilee of his ordination to the Priesthood. Old boys of the College will mark the occasion by the presentation of an address to Father Burger, who has been connected with the college since 1914, and headmaster since 1930. A Mass for departed old boys will be said at the College on Wednesday morning. Father Burger is a native of Kumara, and he was ordained on November 21, 1909.
A cablegram from Rome announced the death of Cardinal Pietro Gasparri, aged 72 years. He was Secretary of State to Popes Benedict XV. and Pius XI., relinquishing the latter position in 1930. He was a distinguished Canonist, and was probably the best-known ecclesiastic in Rome. He took a principal part in the bringing about of the Lateran Treaty. Cardinal Barnardini, Apostolic Delegate to Australasia, and resident in Australia, and Cardinal Peter Gasparri, of Rome, are nephews of the deceased Cardinal.
A London cablegram stated that Mrs. Alice Hargreaves died peacefully in her sleep in an old house overlooking Wolfe’s Statue at Westernham Green, which was happily characteristic ’ of Alice’s old-world personality. Although she was over eighty when she visited the United States in 1932. for Louis Carroll’s centenary, she enjoyed the trip immensely. She was greeted everywhere as a world famous figure. Mrs. Hargreaves recently prepared a special copy of “Alice in Wonderland,” which she inscribed “From the original Alice,” and presented it to Princess Elizabeth.
The death took place at Te Kuiti, early this morning, of Mr. Charles Kendall Wilson, one of the best-known residents of the King Country. He was born in Sydney, and ‘came to New Zealand at the age of sixteen, w’ith his parents. He was afterwards an auctioneer at Horowhenua for Abraham and Williams, and came to the King Country in 1910, farming in Piopio. He represented the Waitomo electorate from 1913 to 1916. He was a member of the Meat Board from 1923 till 1931, and a member of the Waitomo' County Council for over twenty years.—Press Assn.
