MEETING
WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL. [our own correspondent.! HOKITIKA, November 14. The Westland County Council met yesterday afternoon. Present: Crs. ft. Chesterman (chairman), J. A Murdoch, M. Keenan, W. Jamieson. W. Searle, J. Donovan, B. Ward, J. J. McKay. An apology was received from Cr. W. J. Correspondence was dealt with as follows: — • From J- O’Brien, M.P., respecting copy of letter forwarded from Messrs Chinn and Q’Neil, Tetaho, in respect to river encroachment. —Considerable discussion ensued, and on the motion of Cr. Donovan, it was resolved to refer the matter back to The Public Works Department From Public Works Department regarding Flower Pot Rock, advising no money is available for maintenance expenditure on the landing. From the Secretary of the Royal Humane Society., Christchurch, thanking the Council for grant towards the funds. . From Progress League, Christchurch, asking Council’s approval oi site for erection of a Dudley Dobson memorial at Arthur’s Pass. From Park and Murdoch, regarding legal opinion with reference to voting rights of miners, stating that a person holding a miner’s right amt on the roll and who is satisfactorily working his claim, is entitled to vote. From Best and Wilkinson, Christchurch, asking for permission tc erect a hangar on Hokitika aerodrome.—Granted. From R. H. Wakelin, Dillmans asking for attention to decking of e Kapitea Creek. . From W. O. Bierwirth, Ross, asking for reconsideration of grant fol Mt. Greenland track. It was agreed to support the application on the condition that the company contributes one third of the cos From County Clerk, Papanui, asking for Council’s support, vigorously opposing any alteration to the Ris - ing County voters’ franchise. Supported. . From F. Woodham, Evans Creek asking if Council would considei spending grant on Petersen road fioni new bridge to gravel bank in gorge. Referred to Engineer. From J. Hewer and J. Adamson Harihari, advising same are preparec to carry out Fergusson road contraci for_ estimate of £lOO. From Ritchie and Congrove, Koiterangi, drawing Council’s attention tc the state of track up the Hokitikt
gorge.—£3 granted. From D. J. Diedrich, Hokitika, torwarding report made on wandering stock. —After due consideration, it was resolved to prosecute two of the offenders. It was also resolved to terminate the service of Mr Diedrich. The Council decided to approach the Highways Board to allow their fia tic Inspector (Mr Clark) to act as stock ranger for three months. , From West Coast Airways Dtd., Hokitika, applying for necessary ground-space for purpose of erecting hangar at Hokitika aerodiome. Granted subject to usual conditions. From E. R. Wilson, Bruce Bay, regarding timber against piers of bridge, advising same has been examined and no timber has been interfered with. From Farmers’ Union, Hariliaii, protesting against Council’s action in taking the roadman off the local roads to attend to new works. From Farmers’ Union, Wataroa, acknowledging Council’s letter regarding wandering stock, advising members note with satisfaction tne active steps being taken to abate same. From R. Villiamsien, Koiterangi, applying for assistance towards access to his property at Doughboy.—To be reported on. Accounts amounting to £5510/8/8 for two months were passed for payment.
The Finance Committee had considered a 5 per cent, increase in workmen’s wages and recommended the matter be deferred until a full meeting of the Council in January, with a favourable recommendation. It also recommended that concrete pipes in preference to a tunnel diversion of Black Creek, Lake Kanieri Highway, be suggested to the Department. The balance-sheet was adopted. The Engineer’s report on the highways was read and approved. The Engineer’s district report was read and approved. Tenders: —Poerua. road extension. — The tender of M. Connolly of £5B 10/- was accepted. Fergusson Road: It was decided to call fresh tenders for this work. A tender for the Christchurch Road was accepted.
Mr J. Robertson, Harihari, applied for a grant.—Agreed. Cr. Donovan moved that £5 be granted towards the Wataroa-Bluff track. —Carried. Cr W. Jamieson thanked the Council, on behalf of the Koiterangi Lime Company, for assistance with regard to new lime kiln road. The Chairman moved that the Council agree to the reappointment of Edward T. Stoop as mining property valuer for the County of Westland for the ensuing period.—Carried The Chairman moved that the Engineer’s report on the- reorganisation of the road staff, dated October 8, be now considered. —Held over till full meeting in January.
