HOMESTEAD ON FIRE. GISBORNE, October 20. Fire destroyed the homestead at Avondale Station, one of the landmarks of the Hangaroa district, owned and occupied by Henry Harris.
RAILWAY WORKER’S MISSION WELLINGTON, October 20.
P. E. Warner, boilermaker at the Hutt Railway Workshops, was finally selected as the railway worker delegate to visit Russia to investigate the conditions of the workers. Warner is a member of the Management Board and the Petone Technical College Workers’ Delegation. He has booked by the Remuera, leaving Auckland on October 27.
AUCKLAND RAID
AUCKLAND, October 19.
Twenty-one men —six Chinese and fifteen Europeans—were arrested by detectives in simultaneous raids on three premises in the city shortly after 8 o’clock to-night. There were nine in the police party, and three went to each house, two of which were in Grey’s Avenue, and the third in Pitt Street. No resistance was offered at any of the three premises. Later a number of the prisoners were charged before a Justice of Peace, with various breaches of the Gaming Act, and were released on bail.
