The Spring meeting of the Auckland Racing Club will open at Ellerslie to-morrow, and with good fields engaged, it needs only fine weather for ,:ho meeting to prove successful. The fields and a review of prospects, are as follow: — TRIAL HURDLES, 11 miles. Free Air .. ‘ .10 8 Dark Marble ..00 Catoma .. 10 1 Great Britain 9 0 Booklaw .. 910 La Femme .. 9 0 Hauwai .. 910 Noir .. .. 9 0, Chromadyne 9, 5 Valorous .. 9 0 Allegretto ..90 Free Air has recent winning form in the South Island, and is a reliable Jumper. Catoma, Booklaw and Hauwai have been schooling well, and Hauwai is accepted as a promising hurdler. Chromadyne and Allegretto are novices, who have been showing promise and are ideal types for hurdling. La Femme Noir made a good showing at Paeroa. The best supported may be Free Air Catoma Chromadyne

G.N. GUINEAS, one mile. Day Wind Canopy King Brierly Gay Blonde Pin Money Lady Kyra Rerepai Mother Superior Sporting Blood Namakia Burnish Windscreen The Great Northern Guineas has attracted a good field. Brilliant two-year-olds were Gay Blonde, Mother Superior, Burnish and Namakia. Gay Blonde has the best credentials fop this season, as yet. Pin Money won the Wanganui Guineas easily, and there is no reason why he should not again beat Mother Superior and- Burnish. Rerepai, Lady Kyra and Namakai are all winners, and Namakia may be the best of the trio. ‘ On public form tho best favoured may be Gay Blonde Pin Money Namakia SHORTS HANDICAP, 6 furlongs. Greek Gold .. 813 Rippling Waters 8 1 Tradesman .. 8 4 King Mestor .. 7 3 British Columbia 8 4 Grand Sport ..7 2 Star Artist .. 8 3 Solomon ..70 Rereatu ..81 Psychologist 7 0 Greek Gold dead-heated for second with Prolyxo about a fortnight ago, behind Rippling Waters, tvhen carrying 9.2. /Tradesman and British Columbia each raced at the Pakuranga meeting, which is their onjy outing this season, and the latter did best. Both have plenty of pace. Star Artist was a fine sprinter last season, but has not had a race this term. Rereatu should be one of the fittest horses in the race, for he has been seen out on several occasions this season, winning well over six furlongs at Wanganui, while he has since been in the money at Foxton, and twice at Otaki. Rippling Waters was a brilliant two-year-old, and after being off the scenp for a long time, signalised her return by winning well at Paeroa recently. Of the others, King Mestor, who was .placed at the same’ meting, and Solomon, read best. The favourites may be

Rereatu Rippling Waters Tradesman MITCHELSON CUP, H miles. Red Manfred ..90 Mungatoon .. 712 Spiral .. . • 8 7 Horowhenua i < Carfex .. .. 8 6 Koroklo .. 7 0 Havering ..8 5 Solarium •• f “ Baroscope .. 8 3 First Lap ‘ ® Limbohm .. 8 0 Wee Pat .. .. t 0

Gainsfld .. 712 Thirteen remain m the Mitchelson Cup, and the large majority have good recent form to recommend them. Red Manfred has only had one race this season, the Gold Cup ht Foxton, 'but he made a poor showing. However, he should be improved. Spiral had a couple of races at Wanganui last month, and looks as though he will improve a good deal this* season, and ho should run well to-morrow. Carfex was fourth in this race last year, with 8.5. During the last few weeks he ran second at Wanganui, after being unlucky to get hemmed in at the turn. Going on to Foxton, he won, and that form is sure to make him a good prospect for to-morrow. Havering disappointed at Paeroa, but Baroscope, who won this race last year with 7.9, showed up exceellntly at Paeroa when he accounted for the Taumarunui Cup with 7.71, and was second over" one mile and 110 yards on the concluding day. Limbohm won over a mile and a-quarter at Wanganui with 7.10, and finished on well. Gainsfld was third at the Pakuranga meeting, and in the Taumarunui Cup, also at the recent meeting at Paeroa. Mungatoon was second at Pakuranga. He usually races well when fresh. Horowhenua was successful at Geraldine recently, and had good horses behind him. He only needs to stay on to have a good chance. Korokio won at Otaki over

a nfile and a-quarter, in good style, and is a New Zealand Oaks winner. Solarium has run good races up to a mile and a quarter, and is reported to be doing well. He is certainly a lightweight prospect. Among those who may be in demand are Spiral Baroscope Carfex

HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE, about 2J miles. Hauwai .. ’ll 4 Zane Grey .. 9 2 Flower Bag .. 11 0 Ardmanning 9 0 Miss Dazzle .. 9 10 Bamba ... 9 0 London .. 9 S Vai Reo .. .. 9 0 Capella Abbey 9 8

Hauwai, if reserved, for this race, will probably be favourite, as he has a good record over country. Flower Bag also, has some impressive performances, and the limit of his capabilities is not yet known. Miss Dazzle is a young mare who won at Pakuranga, and Capella Abbey scored at Gisborne. Favourites may be / Hauwai Flower Bag Miss Dazzle WELCOME STAKES, 5 furlongs. Gay Sheik Galileo Legality colt Kotou Small Boy Symcony Trevace The Vamp Fleetwind Of the nine in the Welcome Stakes, four have already won, one has been second, and the remainder have not raced. Gay Shiek is a full-brother to Gay Shiela and Gay Blonde, both good two-year-olds in their year, and he gives promise of carrying on the family tradition. He was third at

< Marton, but won at Paeroa, beating Galilee and others, Galilee turning the tables the next day. The Legality colt has not raced. Small Boy was second to Kotou at Napier. He is. by Psychology from Susan Lennox. His dam is by Kilboy from Shona; May, by Treadmill from Trevace is a colt by The (sire of Fast Passage) from Charts. Fleetwind is a filly by Whirlwind from Judge’s Box, the latter being a full sister to Royal Box; Tarleton and Affirm, and a halfsister to Bonnetter, Historic and Mervette, so that she has breeding in her favour. Galilee was a iyinner at Paeroa. Kotou is a fily by Night Raid from Courtesy, by Limpnd from •Homage, the latter a sister to Humoug, Epitaph, Commendation, Eulalie and Praise, while Courtesy is a full sitser to Episode and Honour, Kotou therefore, comes from a speedy line. Symcony is by Gascony from Symoallo, and previous to beating Legatee at Wanganui, Symcony was only defeated by a head by Severe at Marton. Tho Vamp is a filly by Sargon from Shebang, and is a half-sister to Tavern Knight and, Lion Heart, both of whom are racing in Australia at present. Trevace, The Vamp, Fleetwind and the Legality colt have not raced. The three that appeal are Symcony Galilee Kotou

The three best supported may be ' Chief Cook Lord Vai Pomp RACES AT TIMARU. PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW. [SPECIAL TO “STAR.”] CHRISTCHURCH, October 12. The South Canterbury Jockey Club’s Spring meeting will be held on the Washdyke racecourse to-morrow. The track is likely to be fast. The two dividend system of betting will'be in use. The programme is as follows: — OTAIO HURDLES, IB miles. The opening event, the Otaio : Hurdle Handicap, has drawn a useful field, the majority of the runners having been seen in action at recent meetings. Gold Knight and Lycidas have figured as winners this season, and the latter created a good impression by his two victories at Wingatui, beating Black Duke on each occasion. He is on the improve all the time, and is entitled to be favourite. Most support may be forthcoming for Lycidas Gold Knight Black Duke SPRING STAKES, 5 furlongs (all 8.7) Arrowform Lucky Locket Azevedo> Marking Time Black Lead Pink Lapel Coast of Arms Royal Coat Kpris Secret Paper First View Silver Lark Honest Terra Nova Honours Lass Trumpet Blast

Others that have shown encouraging form are Azevedo, Coat of Arms, Honeste, Honour’s Lass, Joyous, Secret Paper, Trumpet Blast and Tuirau. Polydora is expected to be paraded on this occasion, and if so, her form will be closely followed. Argentic has been progressing better of late than ever previously, and is one of the early fancies for the New Zealand Cup. Sweet Agnes, too, is a Cup favouirte, and her two gallops this week with Tout le Monde suggested she has retained the form ■which won her two good races at the Grand National meeting. Of the remainder, Cough, Some Shamble, Red Racer, Silver Sight, Tout le Monde and Nightform will each have a good following, but the honour of favouritism will probably be disputed by Polydora Sweet Agnes Argentic

Palermo, Silver Streak, Red Boa and Kerbside raced well at Wingatui last week, and Knockfin arid Cranford have executed some outstanding gallops of late, while Gaysome is likely to improve on her Geraldine showings. This event should provide a close tussle over the final stages, and the final summing up may >bc in favour of

Knockfin Cranford Kerbside NOTES FROM RICCARTON. INTERESTING TRACK WORK. [SPECIAL TO “ST AB.” I CHRISTCHURCH, October 11. conditions prevailed for training operations at Riccarton today, and some interesting work was executed on the trial grass by horses that are engaged a,t Washdyke on Saturday, and at later meetings this month. The track, which at present carries a thick sole of grass, provided excellent going, and times were fast. The jfirst ’to work before breakfast were P. V. Mason’s pair, Variant and Hostis, who strode over a mile in 1.48. The former is coming to hand very well, and will soon make her reappearance. Cricket Bat galloped seven furloiigs at an even pace in 1.30, and Rocket and Streamline went over the same ground at a strong working pace. Copyist turned on a burst of speed in reeling off half a mile along the back in 48secs. He is- in good order to race at Trentham. Knock Out beat Trumpet Blast over *ialf a mile in 51, and Horn’s Reef was let off with a light task. Silvox was not asked to go fast in covering a mile in 1.45 2-5, and Dollar Prince was given similar work, taking 1.48, while the latter’s stable mate, Sibella, followed in 1.45 2-5. Top Rank ran half a mile in 53 2-5, and Tuirau recorded 54 2-5. Rebel Star and Imperial Spear galloped five furlongs in 1.4 4-5, and Sea Fox executed a like task. Great Star covered seven furlongs in 1.30 2-5, the last half in 51. He looks well, and will reappear at Washdyke. Heather Glow and Silver Jest were companions over six furlongs in 1.17 £-5, the last three in 38 1-5. Coal Pit and Wino sprinted half’a mile attractively in 49 2-ssecs. The former is the Cockpit —Gold Bound filly in A. S. Ellis’s Stable, and is a sister to Gold Pit.

Fast Travelling: Knockfin, with a flying start, galloped seven furlongs in 1.28, the first three taking 36 3-5, and the first halfmile 49 3-5. She is to race at Washdyke on Saturday, but may not make the trip to Trentham. Elbanor ran six furlongs in 1.18 3-5, the last three in 39 3-5. Strong Light beat Cinders over seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5. The former who does not shape well in soft going, looks likely soon to get on the winning list.

Finishing On: Tout le Monde and Sweet Agnes wore responsible for a useful effort over nine furlongs. The former led his companion for the greater part of the journey, but Sweet Agnes was on terms at the post. The time was 1.55 ■l-5, the first half taking 49, and last three 38 1-5. Colossian strode over seven furlongs in 1.32, and Silver Step beat Sky Rover in 1.31. Manetho and Fair Weather covered six furlongs in 1.16 2-5, the last three in 38secs. First Course finished in front of Davolo at the end of seven furlongs in 1.32. The latter carried a big weight, and could have been closer. Gaysome was sent from the six furlong post, but did not settle down to serious work until two furlongs had been covered. She took 27secs. for the first two furlongs, and the full distance occupied 1.16 3-5.

A Good Mile Effort: Polydora and Cough were again companions in a mile gallop, taking 1.40 4-5. The first three furlongs were covered in 36 4-5, half-mile in 50 1-5, and five furlongs in 1.3 3-5. Polydora streaked away from Cough turning for home, but there was only a little over a length between them at the finish. Polydora is booked to go to Washdyke, and the stable apprentice, J; Murfitt, will ride her, and he will also have the mount on Knockfin. Cough has made marked improvement of late, and with the tracks from now onwards to her liking, she will soon attract attention.

Speedy Sprinters: Rebel Chief and Iceni raced abreast from the mile to the half-mile in 48 3-ssecs., and Quebec and First View covered the same ditsance home in 49 3-ssecs. Quebec suffered from leg trouble shortly after arriving from the

North, and has undergone beach work at New Brighton. Quietly and Cheap Money galloped five furlongs in 1.2 3-5. Invoice and Gold Cross sprinted half a iriile in 49, and Honour’s Lass recorded 50 2-5.

Cranford again impressed by covering six furlongs in 1.15.

Some Shamble and Silver Sight strode over seven furlongs in 1.30.

Argentic and Ranelagli did well in covering a mile in 1.42, the second half in 51 4-5. The former carries a inuch more robust appearance than formerly, and will have a large following in. his forthcoming engagements, including that in the New Zealand Cup. '

Over the Hurdles: Monastic (H. Turner) jumped six hurdles. He gave a mixed display, and will need a lot more experience before he iyili be a reliable proposition over the battens.

Every .Chance: Azevedo, owned by C. S. Donald, was ap early morning visitor, and in a sprint with Night Gem ran half a mile in good time. This good looking chestnut gelding, by Arausio from Delphi, dam of Adelphi, has been given every clianco to come good, as he is now five years old, and has practically been in commission since being broken in as a youngster. He showed . promising form at the Grand National meeting, but shortly afterwards received an injury to his head, and to-day’s was his first fast work. He will be raced at Washdyke if a suitable rider can bo secured.

Put Aside: Control is still at F. D. Jones’s stable, but is not in work. His trainer, E. Parker, 'intends to blister him shortly, arid turn' him out on his owner’s property for a few months. Stability, by British Empire from the Paper Money' mare Currency,.from the same stable, was given a half-mile gallop today, with Bella Rosa, and shaped well. He is a half-brother'to Solvent, but is much more solidly built than her, and is likely to stand up to a more strenuous career. Bella Rosa has done well since last raced, and should earn more distinction in the near future. For Ellerslie:

Punchestown and Hounsloiv are regular workers at headquarters. They are likely to race in the brush hurdle event at the New Zealand Cup meeting, and present intentions are to send them to Ellerslie during the holiday period.

New Arrival: Azalea, by Chief Ruler from Bayloch, dam of Bay Tree and Whirnside, lias produced a colt foal to Nightmaich. Azalea cost Mr. G. D. Greenwood 550 giurieas as a yearling, and won two races for him. She later became the property of P. V. Mason, who, after she raced disappointingly, retired her to the stud. Azalea is only six years Oi age, and on of her breeding should develop into a most successful brood mare.

Increasing Numbers: J. Tomkinson’s team, at Riccarton, now totals eight, a late addition being Mr G. Gould’s Jericho gelding Fiat Lux. Others are Grecian Prince, Moonbean, Emissary, Liberate (Polazel— Lightning Raid), Highbrow a three-year-old gelding,’ by Polazel from Precious, and a Philamor —Helen Hunt two-yeay-old. ELLERSLIE SCRATCHINGS. AUCKLAND, October 11. Ellerslie scratchings are: Shorts Handicap: Jonathan 9.45 a.m. Cup: Gold Trail, 9 a.m. Gordon Handicap: Sir Nigel. Guineas: Pawky. All engagements: Legatee. RANDWICK ACCEPTORS. SYDNEY, October 11. Acceptors for the City Jjatteisails races at Randwick on Saturday are: Flyweight Handicap: Nine acceptors including Golden Wings, topweight, 9.7. City Tattersall’s Handicap: Ten acceptors including Satmoth, topweight 8.10: Deputy Ruler 8.2. WON OVER £1,000,000 - Mr. Victor Raby, who was educated at Cheltenham College, and who was known to Chileans as “the most perfect English gentleman of the Turf,” recently died "at Santiago. As trainer, owner, and gentleman jockey, he became the most prominent figure of Chilean racing, and during his association with the Turf won over £1,000,000 in prize money. “Don Victor,” as he was known to liis friends, died on the day that one of his horses won another classic race on the Santiago course. In tribute to his memory, states Reuter, all the newspapers draped their sporting pages in black.

GREYMOUTH JOCKEY CLUB.

PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT

The annual report of the President of the Greymouth Jockey Club, Mr T. E. Coates, to be presented at the annual meeting on October 25, is as follows: —In presenting the annual report and statement of accounts for the year ending June 30, 1934, your committee has pleasure in recording a very successful season from a racing point of view, the weather generally being good, the fields large, and the racing keen. From a financial point of view, however, a small nett loss of £44 7/10 has to be recorded, and but for the operations of the live stock department this loss would have been considerably increased, as a profit of £220 11/5 was shown in the latter department. During the year application was made to the Government for rebate of an additional 1$ per cent, on totalisator turnover, which would have meant an additional sum of £250 to the Club’s funds, but we regret to state that this application was unsuccessful. ' The Gaming Act legislation which has been before Parliament for several sessions has not yet found its way to the Statute Book, but hopes are entertained that this will be passed during the present session. Should the Bill introduced become law, considerable financial relief will be given to clubs situated such as this Club is. Your committee regrets to record the deaths during the year of two old and respected members of the Club in the persons of Caviliere Geraldo Perotti and Gustav Schaef, whose loss will be greatly felt in the community. Nominations for the position of President, and Members of the Committee, must be deposited with the secretary at least ten (10) days before the annual meeting.
