Though it had been stated bj r the police that about 50 charges would be preferred against two men, only 10 were made When they appeared today, but the evidence tendered was long enough to last dll day. The accused were labourers, Arthur Cudby, aged 36, and Mervyn John Cudby, aged 32, and the charges were all connected with burglaries at Lyall Bay and other places about Wellington. Twentyone civilians and seven police officers are witnesses, and there are many exhibits. MONEY WON AT BETTING. WELLINGTON, September 20. Detective Waterson said that Mervyn Cudby, when shown the list of houses broken into, denied that he had anything to do with breaking into any of the houses. He said that he would plead guilty to being in possession of house-breaking instruments, but deny breaking into any houses. Questioned regarding the large sum of money possessed by him and his wife, and how he got the money, seeing he had not been working for a considerable time, he said he won it backing racehorses, backing with two bookmakers. He admitted that he had not been working for twelve months. Detective Waterson said lie found at Sterling’s house a heel mark, which corresponded with the rubber heel of a boot found at Mervyn Cudby's house. ‘ The case was adjourned until October 2.
