The Ashburton County Racing Club’s spring meeting, to be held to-morrow, will inaugurate spring racing in the South Island. The programme is well filled, and for the first time for many years, it will be necessary to decide one event in two divisions. The Club's programmes have always been confined to .seven events, and. as eight are. allowed, if desired, it will be possible to regard the two divisions as two separate races, arid the totalisator will be poen on .each. Each winner will get £55, and the second and third horses. £lO and £5 respectively. The track had a good soaking early in the week, but has dried up since, and the going should be excellent without being as fast as usual, Win and place betting will be in use. The programme is as follows: — 12.30 NOVICE STAKES, 5 furlongs. First Division.

The Novice Stakes.is to be decided in two division, which will be treated as two separate races. In the first division, the best form is represented by Moonbcdm, I. Spy and Trumpet Blast, while others iri Orris, Theatin arid Horotiu have shown good track work. The favourites. riiay be T r urn pet BI ast ' Moonbeam Orris 1.5 LONGBEACH HACK, one mile.

Morepork .. 9 2 The Longbeach Hack Handicap, run under highweight conditions, has drawn an exceptionally strong field, and the issue appears very open. The majority of those carded have promis-, ing form to their credit, these including Top Rank, Cottingham, Grampian, Velvet, Elgindale, Braw Lad, Silver, Step and Epris. This should provide an interesting contest,, and the finish is likely to be confined to Cottingham Top Rank Elginade 1.40 SELMA TROT, 3.43 class, 1| miles. The second division of the .Novice Stakes will be as difficult to adjudicate upon as the first, and again speculation will be well divided. The field is fairly well balanced, and the best of an even lot appear to be Rebel Cihef Madam Pompadour Emissary 2.55

The principal event, the Ashburton Handicap, should provide an excellent race, as the majority of those carded have to be credited with attractive form. Davolo has made ,a sudden rise to the top of the handicaps,, but as he has not doge a great deal of galloping since -the Grand National meeting, he will probably not be wound up for this big ordeal. Argen- j tic has not been very prominent for i some months, but has been executing some useful work, and should do well this season. His stable mate, Ranelagh, is in good order, and is capable of creating one of his surprises. Ventrac is a likely favourite, while Some j Shamble will also be in good demand.: Giggleswick will find the track to his, liking, and has to be regarded. Silver i Sight is one of the most consistent gallopers in the field, and a win for him in this.would be well deserved. Cleaner is always dangerous under a light weight, and raced well on the same course in July. Of the remainder i Tout le Monde will have a following, I but it is questionable if he will do as | well under a light rider as in his previous effort with a strong horseman. Patrons can look forward to a close i tussle over the final stages, _ and the i final summing up may be in favour of

Silver Sight Cleaner Some Shamble 3.30 PENSCROFT HACK, 6 furlongs.

The hack class is strongly represented in the field for the Pencroft Handicap, and once again investors are faced with an intricate problem. Over half of the number have to be seriously considered, and there should be a close tussle for the honour of favour-

( itism,' which may probably rest, between a . Travrinna Master Reynard Cheap Money 4.5 SPRING HANDICAP, 6 furlongs. FIRST OF CLASSIC RACES. AT WANGANUI TO-MORROW. The second and concluding day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s, meeting will take place to-morrow, vjhen the first 'of the season’s classic races will be decided, the Debutante Stakes, and the' Wanganui Guineas. The fields with prospects for to-morrow are: —

Legatee . • 8 5 This will provide the second race this season for two-year-olds, the first having taken place at Marton, last week. Four of the eleven engaged’, raced at Marton, Severe winning, and Syriiphony finishing in second place. Legatee was fourth, with Lady Ruler behind him. Entail, trained at Wanganui, is reported to be smart, while Grateful has gained a reputation front track doings at New Plymouth. Sergia is a filly by Lord Quex, from Sunny Hours (a half sister to Passion Fruit). Although very promising, she may not be as forward as some of the juvenile 'facing there. Severe and Symphony will most likely fight out the issue, and as there was only a head between 'them at Marton, another good contest is promised. Severe won from behind, and the order of betting will probably be —

Severe, Symphony. 12.30 GONVILLE HACK HURDLES, 1 mile.

Emotion’s weight has been raised 51b on yesterday’s impost, and Silent Bill has gone up 131 b. The latter won fairly easily yesterday, and showed, a lot of speed over the final bit. Form in hurdle events is generally reliable, and a repitilion of the first day is probable. Count Lendroff was scratched at 10.30 this morning. The favourites should be — Silent Bill, Emotion. 1.10. TRIAL HANDICAP, 7J furlongs.

This is a strong field, with recent winners in Leo Colossus, Gallant Knight, Flammarion, and Hukemanu engaged. Of these, Gallant Knight scored convincingly at Marton, but Hukemanu, after being disqualified from his winning effort at New Plymouth on the opening day, because his rider weighed in a stone light, scorefl easily on the second day. He was unplaced yesterday. Sunee finished second to Flammarion yesterday, and his form was in keeping with his recent promising track efforts. Royal Feast, who hails from Hawke’s Bay, secured a third placing yesterday. He has given promise on several occasions, but this company may be beyond a maiden performer. The form horses should prevail and of these, the two best may be — Gallant Knight, Flammarion. 1.55. WANGANUI GUINEAS, one mile.

The principal event on the programme, the Wanganui Guineas, has attracted a field which contains some of the best of last season’s juveniles. Synagogue was withdrawn from the race at noon to-day. Inveresk’s form has been poor, but Pin Money has had the advantage of recent racing, and must be considered, although on last season’s form, there are fillies engaged who should again beat him. Burnish was the best last season, yet she gave an indifferent showing yesterday. She was the outsider in the field for the Flying Handicap, and was never dangerous. Pin Money beat her, and will probably do so again, to-morrow. Mother Superior, another of last season’s brilliant youngsters, did not attract the public yesterday, for she went out eighth favourite in a field of nine in the Seafield and ran unplaced. Evasion and Hunting Queen do not offer bright prospects. Superior has been doing nicely in recent efforts and may be equal to testing the best in to-mor- . row’s event. The racing yesterday i was the first this season for Burnish and Mother Superior, and they can I be expected to make holder show-

lings in the Guineas. The selection is for — Pin Money, Mother Superior. 2.40. HIGGIE HANDICAP,. 1 mile and a

Spiral' is likely to benefit more than Tiger Gain, with yesterday’s racing, and these two should again par-, ticipate in the stake. Plateau was a close fourth yesterday, and it does not seem likely that others in the field will finish ahead of the. three mentioned. The order selected is— Spiral, Tiger Gain. 3-25. MOUTOA HACK PLATE, 1 mile and

The Hack Plate has an abundance of form horses engaged. A good position at the barrier will be beneficial. Headmistress won narrowly yesterday, from Davidstock, and the latter should be equal to reversing the position to-riiorrow, as he comes to hand quickly. This field is much stronger than that which opposed Headmistress yesterday. Cyclonic, Midian, and Blackman are three that will be noticed. Cyclonic is one of the' best engaged, and should take a lot of beating. Santoft is a likely lightweight if he can secure a capable boy to ride him. The two that appeal most are —

Cyclonic, Davidstock.

Orapai will be better suited over six furlongs than he was yesterday in the Seafield Handicap. He should give his supporters a good run for their money, to-morrow. The Tiger returned yesterday, but Good Hunting now rneets him on 51b better terms, arid aa there was but a head separating them, Good Hunting may reverse yesterday’s pladings. Rerdatu finished in second place over seven and a-quarter furlongs yesterday and, Pomp made a promising return to racing by finishing fourth. Orapai won this event last year. The public will not neglect— Orapai, Good Hunting. 4.55. SPRING HACK HANDICAP, 5 fur-

Rerepai accounted for a strong field in the Durie Handicap yesterday. x ,e has 111 b more to carry to-morrow, but the distance is a furlong shorter, and that will be in his favour. Hunting Lodge finished in third place to Rerepai, and now meets him on 91b better terms. As Hunting Lodge has been racing well, she may lift the big end of the purse to-morrow. Of the others, the best appear to be Bodyline. Whyte Melville, and Royal Feast, the latter in particular should go strongly in this scurry. The public will not hesitate to support, Hunting Lodge, Rerepai. WANGANUI—FIRST DAY. I r~rTHE TIGER WINS SPRINT. t WANGANUI, September 13. . Ideal spring weather prevailed this afternoon for the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting, and the attendance was satisfactory. The going was good, after rain. The tote handled £7,596J, as compared with £6,253£ last year, when the first day’s racing was postponed till Friday. After the Okehu Hurdles, an inquiry was held into the running of Brigadore, and it was decided to exonerate the owner. While accepting the explanation of Trillo, the rider, the Stewards expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the mount, Trillo apparently suffering from the after-effects of illness. Concluding results: — Marangai Handicap, 11 miles. — 2 Limbohm (W. J. Broughton) 1; 2 Spiral (L. J. Ellis) 2 1 Tiger Gain (K. Voitre) 3. Also started: 6 Plateau, 5 Mercian Prince, 4 Beryl Latour. Mercian Prince and Tiger Gain led Spiral and Plateau down the back and into the straight, where Spiral came through, but was worm down by Limbohm, who won by a head. -Tiger Gain was three-quarters of a length away, and Plateau was fourth. Time 2.S 2-5.

Seafield Handicap, 1| furlongs.—3 Passion Fruit (P. Atkin) 1; 2 Rereatu (K. Voitre) 2; 5 Korokio (R. Marsh) 3. Also started: 1 Orapai, 6 King’s Knave car. 8.7, 4 Pomp, 8 Mother Superior, 9 Windscreen, 7 Prolyxo. Rereatu,. Mother Superior, Windscreen, King’s Knave and Pomp Avere the order along the .back, but Passion Fruit ran round his field on the home turn and won easily by two lengths, Rereatu beating Korokio by a head for third. Pomp was 1 fourth.. Time 1.32.

Rerepai and Cyclonic wlere in the van for the greater part of the journey, Rerepai holding off Cyclonic by three-quarters of a length; with Hunting Lodge half a length away. Hunting Jay was fourth. Time 1.141-5. Flying Handicap, 6 furlongs.—l The Tiger (W. Broughton) 1; 5 Good Hunting (B. Morris) 2; 3 Cadland (L. G. Morris) 3. Also started: 6 Burnish, 2 Pin Money 7.10, 4 Superior. The Tiger soon assumed the lead and held off Good Hunting by a neck, with Cadland half a head away. Pin Money was fourth. Time 1.14. GOLDEN WINGS A SECOND. SYDNEY, September 13. Scratchings totalling approximately 40 per cent, of the acceptors resulted in small fields at the twice-postponed

Canterbury Park races, held to-day. The Canterbury Stakes resulted: — Lough Neggh 8.13 , (D. Munro) 1; Golden Wings 8.13' (R. Reed) 2; Whittingham 8.13 (McCarten) 3, Also started: Golden Hair 8.9. Golden Wings led from the start to the straight entrance, where it was tackled by Lough Neagh, who worn nicely by a length; third one-and ahalf lengths away. Time 1.145. Martian Chief was second, in the Campsie Handicap, dn which there were seven starters. ROSEHILL ACCEPTORS. SYDNEY, September 13.
