REEFTON NOTES

[our own correspondent.] REEFTON, September 13. At the monthly meeting of the Reefton branch of the W.C.T.U., Mrs Thompson (president) occupied the chair. Captain Rankin, of the Salvation Army, delivered the occasional address, the subject being the social service work of the Salvation Army. The speaker was accorded a vote of thanks. The Reefton Musical and Literary Society in conjunction with a party of visiting artists, were to have staged an entertainment in the Criterion Theatre on Wednesday night, in aid of the schools’ dental clinic funds. Owing to counter attractions, the attendance was meagre, some 40 persons being present, and it was decided to refund patrons theii - money and declare the entertainment off. Rev. Father Seymour, president of the Society, thanked patrons for their attendance.

The monthly meeting of the Reefton District High School Committee was held last evening. Present: Messrs C. Potter, W. J. Duff, J. Hawthorne, C. Cleaver, H. Campbell (secretary) and Mr Pratt (headmaster). Apologies for absence were received from Mr W. B. Auld and Mr D. Panckhurst. Mr Cleaver was voted to the chair. The Nelson Education Board wrote regarding grant for repairs to fencing and regarding concrete path. Regarding the work on the playground, it was decided to thank Mr Waddell for the offer of the use of his horse and dray and to employ the same with two men to complete the filling in of the depression left by the removal of the old school. It was resolved to write to the Nelson Education Board regarding the new double gate, and request that this gate be made in a large and small section so that it can be utilised for general entrance on the western side of the school ground. It was decided to proceed with the ploughing of the corner of the school ground, and other work in connection with flower plots, etc. The annual report of the inspectors was tabled, and showed a satisfactory state in the work of the school, special mention, being made of efficiency, organisation ,order and tone, and quality of the instruction, all of which received favourable commendation. The wider curriculum, especially regarding the mining course in the secondary department, was favourably commented upon by the Inspectors.
