In the textile industry, violence was centred in New England to-night, with several thousand militiamen mobilised in the States of Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island and Connecticutt in order to suppress raids by the pickets on mills. The most serious riots occurred at Saylesville in Rhode Island, where from three to four thousand of the strikers battled with the militia and police for hours. Eight were injured as troops fired point blank into the mob. Scores more suffered baton injuries or were gassed. The strikers, however, continued to charge and. they ripped the gates from the plants, and they destroyed much property. They also attempted to set fire to the buildings before they were repulsed. The strikers also stoned the troops unmercifully with paving blocks. Early this morning, many of the strikers concentrated at the cemetery,

using the memorial stones as a barricade, and they defied th© troops to dislodge them. NEW ORLEANS CONTROL. NEW YORK, September 12. A New Orleans message states: — Mr Huey P. Long, who already is virtually the director of the State of Louisiana, through the action of the Legislature, extended his control over the city of New Orleans on Tuesday

by virtue of the victory of his candidates in State Primary ballot over those of Mayor T. Seihmes Walmsley. This campaign has been a bizarre one with Mr Long supported in variousmovements by National Guard troops, while the Mayor, used the city forces. Mr Long intends to press for an investigation of his charges of graft and corruption in the city administration with the purpose of ousting Mayor Walmsley. NEW DEAL UPHELD. NEW YORK, September 10. A message from Portland, Maine, says that Governor Louis J. Brann, Maine’s first Democratic Governor in sixteen years, was re-elected to-day in the face of Republican demands for his defeat as a symbol of Maine’® repudiation of the New Deal. It was the first time in Maine’s history that a Democratic Governor won a second, term.
