UNEMPLOYMENT

RELIEF OF DISTRESS. Eighty-six applicants for assistance from Greymouth and Cobden were each granted the usual parcel of foodstuffs, at yesterday’s meeting of the Mayor’s Relief of Distress Committee. In addition, 77 married men each received an order for 10/- for the, purchase of goods from nominated tradesmen; seven single men each received a 5/- order. Accounts amounting to £7 13/6 were passed for payment. Urgent enquiries are being received for babies’ clothes, and clothing for boys aged two and three years; also boys’ boots, size 12, men’s boots or shoes, sizes seven and eight, and men’s working clothes. “We appreciate what has been done since the appeal appeared in the ‘Star’ last week,” said the Mayor, “and we will be grateful for any further donations.” Donations received during the week included two parcels of mixed clothing from Mrs Truman, Marlborough Street; two pairs of men’s shoes, size eight; women’s shoes, two pairs size three, three pairs size four, one pair size five; one pair of child’s shoes, size 13; one pair of men’s sandshoes, size six; and three pairs of slippers. Bread and cakes were received from Messrs Shannon and Glen, Robertson and Blanchfield. The boot-repairing department dealt with 13 pairs of footwear during the week, the value of the work being £4 5/6., During the past two months, 143 pairs of footwear have been repaired, the value of the work being £37 7/6. During the past five months; 451 pairs of footwear have been repaired, the value of the work being £129 10/-. Since the inception of the department in August, 1932, a total of 3192 pairs of footwear have been attended to, the value of the work being £9Ol 'B/6.

HOBSONVILLE BASH AUCKLAND, September 13. Following repeated disputes over the conditions of re|ief work at Hobsonville air Base, advice has been received from the Public Works Minister that the work will be reSuined next Monday and that a “getting fit” allowance of 12 p6r cent, on the present co-operative .Contract prices will be paid to men for the first month, and 6 per cent, for the second month. About 100 men are required for the job.
