BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS

COAST AMATEUR TOURNAMENT. It is mahy months since an amateur tournament was held in Greymouth due to that temporary lull, which al! snort experiences from time to time. During the past few months, howeve" enthusiasm has been revived amongst the young men \ ntel * and trainers throughout the Coast have been busy with large schools, some members of which are experienced in ringci;aft, and otheis quite new to the spoit. The ton nament at Reeftou, last Saturday, showed definitely that amateur boxing is again on the upward tiend. There are many promising boxeis seeking honours in the roped squsire. The 1934 West Coast Amateur Championships will be conducted in the Greymouth Town Hall to-moii night, by a club that has earned the reputation of making a success of all it has so far undertaken—the Kaioio Sports Club. This year the Club secured a permit from the Giey mouth Boxing Association, to extend its activities to boxing. That the Club should be in control ot Ute West Coast Amateur Championships before making its initial effort, is due to the fact that the Association was only too willing to forego responsibility of the championships, under the belief that amateur boxing was dormant throughout the Coast. The Karoro Club, always happy in tackling an obstacle, did not meet with any on this occasion, for the nominations received constitute a record. Amateur boxing, the Club found, was very much alive on the Coast, and all the boys were awaiting, was an opportunity to step into the ring. Fortune continues to smile on the Karoro Sports Club, and with the material available for tomorrow night’s tournament, it should be in the position to provide the public with many thrilling, and firstclass bouts. With few exceptions, the amateurs who will step into the ring to-morrow night, were in action at Reefton last Saturday. As that tournament was the best seen on the Coast for many years, and with the contestants in improved condition, a night of entertainment, of the class long awaited by the boxing public of Greymouth and surrounding districts, is close at hand. There were several Greymouth enthusiasts at the Reefton tournament, and they will agree that the matching of several of the bouts arranged for to-morrow night, give assurance of first-class contests. Many new names figure in the draw. While the majority hold fair prospects, there are others who, although expected to fail as scientific gldVemen, will set the house rocking with laughter. The general standard of the fights, however, should be high. The attraction will be the meeting of W. Hawes, Australasian champion, and P. Zampesi, of Greymouth. This should be the bout of the night, with Zampesi extending the champion in each round. Other stirring mills should figure in most' of what will be a lengthy programme.

The first bout will commence at eight o’clock, and the draw for the first rounds is as follows: — Flyweight (Bst.): J. Comerford (Westport) v. J. i ..mips (Blackball). Bantam (Bst. 61bs.): A. Gillanders (Koiterangi) v. N. Comerford (Westport); J. Paton (Greymouth) v. C. Mathieson (Reeftun;; H. Menzies (Westport) a bye. Featherweight Lst.): W. Hawes (Westport) v. P. Zampesi (Greymouth).
