DUKE OF GLOUCESTER

DEPARTURE QN CRUISER. [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Recd. September C, 11 a.m.) MARSEILLES, September 5. The Duke of Gloucester embarked on H.M.S. Sussex this morning. He was in civilian attire and looked extremely fit and happy. The Sussex encountered fog immediately upon leaving Marseilles. JOURNALIST’S TRIBUTE. (Recd. September 6, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 5. Hector Bolitho in an article in the “Mail” says: The Duke of Gloucester’s place in the Royal lineage is particularly interesting. He had inherited many of the qualities of the Prince Consort and King George, two men devoid of humbug, and almost alarming in their allegiance to duty, rich in honour, simplicity and kindness. His sense of humour will commend him to the country where people are judged by more simple standards than in Europe. His childhood was fortunate, because as one of a large family, and of the fourth generation, he was unspoiled by admiration and public curiosity. He was taught and trained as any gentleman’s, son, and did not receive special attention at Eton or Cambridge. Though too young to go \ to the war, his love of soldiering mani- \ fested itself after 1918. He first joined the infantry, but his devotion to horses caused him to transfer to the cavalry.
