DOG TRIALS. [PEE PBEBS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, September 4. Gun dogs from many parts of New Zealand participated in land and water trials at a competition held by the Hutt Valley Kennel Club. An outstanding performance was given by the Labrador retriever ch. Pompey, owned by C. V. Mcßeath (Christchurch). In the land and water trials Pompey won the D. A. Ewen Cup, the Horace Smith Cup, the Eric Riddiford Cup, and the Dr. Anson Cup. Tying for second in the land trials were Kai Iwi, a Springer spaniel owned by M. Hunt (Wanganui), and Saddle, a Labrador bitch owned by H. T. Byrne (Masterton), who also took second prize in the water trial. The | third prize in the land trials went to N. A. Pi'ussing (Pahiat.ua), with. an. Irish setter, Ongarue Pat, and the third prize in the water trials was won by Celebrity of Clifton, a Labrador bitch owned by C. V. Mcßeath. In the North Island section, M. Hunter won tho Tisdall Cup in the laud trials, with Kai Iwi, and H. T. Byrne won the Caldwell Cup and Dr. Anson Cup with Saddle. P. R. Rose (Wellington) won the novice water trials with a Labrador bitch, Shotover Shiela.’

Open Handicap, 200 yards: — First Heat: Mountain Buck, Jonah, Lonely Maid 14 yards, Britomartis 12|, Orion 11. Second Heat: Spring Boy 14 yds., Pretty Peter 14, Red Terror 111, Lenin 101. Nominations for the Lightweightand Hurdles Handicap will be taken on the ground. GREY REGATTA CLUB. A meeting of the newly-formed Greymouth Regatta Club was held last evening, Mr J. Rhodes. presiding over a good attendance. An address was given by Mr Reg. Smith, formerly of Christchurch, who introduced to members a new type of yacht, popular in Lyttelton. An offer by Mr L. Wilson of a silver cup for competition, was accepted with thanks. It was decided that an endeavour* be made to raise finance for the purchase of skiffs, and that the club give to new members wishing to build yachts, the use of the Club’s plans, and other building assistance. It is the intention of the club to build a
I boathouse in the near future, and also j to have a junior members’ section of I the club. | MOTOR-BOAT SPEED RECORDS | RUGBY, September 4. Hubert Scott Paine leaves South- ! ampton on Friday with the racing boat Miss Britain the Third, to take I part in the speed record contests at Venice on September 15. He has entered for the world’s single-engined motor-boat record., European sea mile i record, Italian seaplane record, and for the challenge cups from the Crown Prince and Count Voipi. The boat is fitted with a 1300 horsepower engine, which is five years old, but was recently overhauled. Scott Paine states it can now develop at least 1500 horse-power, enabling her to improve upon the previous speed of 102 miles an hour. A new Italian boat, fitted with an aeroplane engine has been constructed to be driven by Count Rossi.
