LOTTERY CONVICTIONS
“AMBULANCE CAR” SCHEME. DUNEDIN, September 5. A fine of- £25 was imposed on the principal promotor, Francis Henry Holz, of a lottery instituted in Wanganui, in the Police Court this morning. The lottery, the prize of which was a Chevrolet car, was intended to build up funds for Wanganui Free Ambulance service, £BOO having already been realised by the sale of tickets throughout the Dominion. A second man associated with the scheme, -Rufus Randolph Parker, was fined £3. Charges against nine Wanganui women who had been selling tickets were withdrawn, the Magistrate remarking they were unwitting trangressors.
The Magistrate said that Holz claimed he was running the scheme for public benefit, but he had a personal and substantial interest in it.
