“MAN OF MYSTERY”
PROFITS FROM ARMAMENTS. [BY CABLE —PBESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] WASHINGTON, September 4. Basil Zaharoff; the European “man of mystery,” received commissions from the Electric Boat Company of New London (Connecticut'). Henry R. Carse, President, testified before the United States Senate Committee to-day in its munitions' inquiry. Carse said the . company paid Zaharoff commissions amounting to (Uu.uoO dollars between 1919 and 1930. Carse also stated that Sir Basil received commissions on their “Spanish business.” The committee was informed that German U-boats of the Great War, had been built upon United States owned patents. Carse further testified that his company and Vickers Ltd., had divided the world into exclusive areas for the sale of submarines, and that the companies interchanged patents for building boats.
