WESTLAND HOSPITAL BOARD. (OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, September 4. The monthly meeting of the Westland Hospital Board was held last evening; present: Messrs. T. AV. Duit (Chairman), G. Davidson, AV. Jamieson Rev. H. J. AV. Knights, AV. H. Evenden, E. AV. Heenan, AV. Jeffries, and A. R. Elcock. Reference was made by the Chairman to the passing of Mrs Breeze, wife of the late Chairman, Mr. J. J. Breeze. The members stood as a mark of respect. Dr. Wilson applied for an extension of leave. On the motion of tlie Chairman. leave was granted. The Public AVorks Department wrote regarding aeroplane landing grounds in South Westland, stating that the Department was prepared to carry out the work according to the wishes of the Board, and asking that the sum of £250 be paid into the public account, and asking also that any comments to be made by the Board be sent on to the P.W. Department. The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £678/4/7, expenditure £B7l/13/6, credit balance £1167/15/10. Accounts amounting to £620/19/4, were passed for payment. The P.AV. Department submitted plans for the proposed X-ray room — 16x25. —Resolved that plans be approved and that tenders be called at once. The Surgeon-Superintendent reported: —Patients in hospital on August 1, 37; admitted during August, 51; total treated during month, 88; discharged cured, 30; discharged relieved, 7; died, 6; remaining in hospital, 45; patients receiving treatment two montjis and over, 18. The Matron’s report showed that the highest number of patients in hospital at one time was 55; and the lowest 26; operations 24, and 14 X-rays. Sister Airey resumed duty on- August 26, after completing six months’ training in Christchurch Hospital, where Nurse Cameron has now gone for six months’ training. Mr. Knights asked if the public was aware of the reason for the new X-ray room, pointing out that the present place was unsuitable owing to being detached from main building. The new room will be a part of the main building.

The Chairman referred to the success of the Hospital Ball; also the juvenile ball. A number of ladies worked hard and willingly to make this annual function a success The Chairwoman (Mrs Perry), and Mrs Paterson (secretary), were especially mentioned. He moved that a hearty vote of thanks be. accorded all the ladies concerned.—Seconded by Mr. Jeffries, and carried. Mr. Jamieson referred to the special effort being made at Kokatahi for the X-ray room and hoped as many of the Board as possible would be present. WESTLAND MINING EXECUTIVE. HOKITIKA, September 3. The Westland County Mining Executive met on Saturday evening. Present; Messrs J. A. Murdoch (Chairman), T. -R. Chesterman, and D. J. Evans. Mr S. W. Strong, Mining Engineer, was also present, and stated he had been asked by the Unemployment Board to report on the method under 1 which the Humphries area could be

worked to the best advantage of all concerned. The supervisors, Messrs Cooper, Harris, and Moore, with Messrs McQuilkin and R. Stewart, were present, and expressed their views on the matter. These were supplemented by the Executive, the chairman outlining the practice on the Kumara field, particularly in respect to the sale of water. Mr Strong said he would report on the lines considered the most practicable. It was stated that Messrs Bromley (deputy chairman of the Board) and Tyndall (Under Secretary of Mines) would visit the district, go over the field and consider the proposals. The general opinion expressed was to the effect that the field with an adequate water supply, offered excellent opportunities for sluicing over a considerable area.

Mr Strong presented the Executive with a large map of the field showing the proposed line of race, and locations and particulars of 96 tests taken over various parts of the large area. At the conclusion of the discussion the Chairman moved a vote of thanks to Mr Strong for attending and the information afforded. Mr Chesterman seconded, which was carried. Krom Unemployment Board, AVellington, relative to irregular sale of gold by Fox and Jolley, asking that demand be made on Fox and Jolley for refund of 10 per cent. From Unemployment Board, agreeing to four men being placed on track work at the head of the Hokitika river, and suggesting that instead of a supervisor being employed, one of the four men be appointed as foreman at 5/- per week extra. —Received. It was explained no local men were available and the work on AVhitcombe track which was to extend over three months, had been offered to men working on subsidy in the locality, and a. reply was being awaited. Cue of iho number would he foreman. —Approved. From Unemployment Board, relative to application by Ford and Glen for reservation of 600 acres, agreeing to reservation being made on behalf of the Unemployment Board, and noting that no cost would be involved.—Action deferred. From Unemployment Board agreeing to supervisor’s allowance for Rimu Flat prospecting, also to temporary supervisor for Blue Spur, both at £3 per week. From Unemployment Board, notifying that AVarden’s Court. Hokitika, had been advised concerning the reservation of extra area at Humphreys, also the area south of Rimu Flat From Unemployment Board notifying that they agreed with the decision of the Executive concerning refund Of £2/10/6 by Fox and. Jolley. From Unemployment Board, tcle,grara stating that the decision to reinstate Fox and Jolley would be left with this committee.

From Westland Acclimatisation Society, forwarding copy of letter signed by three men employed opossumtrapping, notifying that a subsidised miner had been trapping opossums during the time payments were being made to him. also notifying that lhe letter had been placed in the hands of the police for action. —To await action, renewal of subsidy being deferred meantime.

From D. J. Evans, to the Chairman of the Committee, drawing the committee’s attention to extracts from

the N.Z. Handbook of Mining, 1906, setting out the possibilities for a prospecting party under competent supervision in the areas in the far south of AVestland. between Bruce Bay and the Haast.—The Chairman moved the suggested investigation be referred to the Unemployment Board with a favourable recommendation. Mr Chesterman seconded. Carried. From certifying officer, notjaying that A. K. Jolley had refunded ‘£2 10/6 subsidy. From Fox and Jolley and C. A. Jolley, explanation concerning sale of gold and application lor renewal of subsidy to A. K. Jolley and J. N. Fox. —Explanation accepted, and renewal approved, when funds available.

From S. Straight, application for subsidy to prospect at Goldsborough. —Agreed to when eligible. From A. D. Scobie, application for subsidy to prospect at the head of the Hokitika river.—Approved. From S. Foster and O. E. Pritchard, application for subsidy to prospect at Hau Hau. —Supervisor to report. From S. AAA Strong, forwarding application by Purchase ami Thomas for subsidy to sink shaft at Goldsborough. —Approved, when eligible locally.

From L. H. Hunt, application for transfer of subsidy to new locality.— Referred to supervisor. The following renewals were approved:—D. Feeney, Blue Spur; H. A. Jopson, Fergusons; J. Rochford, Dillmanstown; R. Kenny, Goldsborough; V. Johnson, Camerons; T. Growcott, Rimu; Gaze, Hutton and Parker, Goldsborough; E. G. Silk, AVataroa; T. E. Nash, Kanieri Forks;- C. A. Wright, South Hokitika; R. C. Trevathan, Bruce Bay: E. A. D. AVickes, Kumara Junction; J. 11. Evans, Christchurch Road. Reports were received from the supervisors in respect to prospecting operations in the various localities. The report, of gold won for tho fortnight totalled 15ozs 15dwts 7grs. Accounts to the amount of £2O/6/were approved for payment. Ono account was struck out, not being authorised.
