Russ Columbo, a radio and motion picture singer, was shot and fatally wounded to-day, when a relic pistol which he was inspecting accidentally discharged. The bullet ricochetted from a mahogany dresser, and pierced his brain. Columbo, who was 26 years of age, died later in hospital. The accident occurred at the home of Lansing Brown, portrait photographer. A MOTHER’S DEATH. SAN FRANCISCO, September 2. The death has occurred of Mrs Mary Mooney, aged 85 years, the mother of Tom Mooney, who is serving a life sentence at the San Quentin Penitentiary for the Preparedness Day bombing outrage in the year 1916. For years Mrs Mooney had been an untiring worker in an effort to win her sons’s freedom. SILENT NIGHT. RUGBY, September 3. An announcement that the regulations forbidding the use of horns or other warning instruments on motor vehicles after 11.30 p.m. will be extended to all roads in built up areas throughout Britain, has been well received in provincial towns. In accordance with the notice issued by the Transport Ministry, a new order will come into force on September 16. Roads in built up areas are defined as those on which there is provided a system of street lighting furnished by means of lamps placed not more than 200 yards apart. MALCOLM MACDONALD. RUGBY, September 3. Mr Malcolm MacDonald, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Dominion Affairs (son of the Prime Minister) will leave England for Australia in the “Otranto,” next Friday. He will represent the-United Kingdom Branch of the Empire Parliamentary Association at the celebration of the Melbourne Centenary. During part of his journey, he will be accompanied by his sister. Miss Sheila MacDonald. On his way home, he proposes to visit New Zealand, and both in Australia and New Zealand he hopes to devote special consideration to the question of Empire settlement.

PRINCE’S CRUISE RUGBY, September 3. The Prince of Wales, who was engaged on a pleasure cruise on Lord Mayne’s yacht paid a strictly private visit to the Portuguese Colonial Exhibition at Oporto. The Prince had an enthusiastic reception as he crossed the frontier on the way to Oporto from Leixoes. He displayed keen interest in the exhibition and congratulated the organisers on the display.
