CONVOY SLOOPS
BRITAIN’S NEW TYPE. [BY CABLE —PBEBS ASBN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, September 3. The “Daily Telegraph’s” naval correspondent says: The “Bittern.” which is the Navy’s first convoy sloop will shortly be launched at Clydebank. She is designed to fill a dangerous gap in the Empire’s sea defences. Owing to Treaty restrictions. Britain is short of modern cruisers. Tlie “Bittern” does not exceed 2000 tons, but she carries two six-inch guns, instead of the two 4.7 inch guns which have hitherto been carried by similar sloops. Thus the “Bittern” should be able to engage any submarine. If this type is successful, 25 or 30 more of the vessels may be added to the Navy. They will be an invaluable reinforcement, and each costs less than a destroyer.
