CAUSE FOR ENQUIRIES?. [special to “stag.”] > CHRISTCHURCH, September 1. The weather was fine and the trac < in good order for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting. The failuie of at least two favourites could have been the subject of inquiry, but no action was deemed necessaiy. Princess Onyx soon supplanted Real Gift, who broke at the end of a furlong in the Improvers’ Handicap, and the order at the end of hall a mile was Princess Onyx, Parette. Renegade, Header. Tiny Guy and Real Gift. Down the back Sonoma King improved his position and Header moved up on the outside to get almost on terms with the leader. Parette broke crossing the top, and Princess Onyx led into the straight from Header, Renegade, Gay Crusader and Sonoma King. Princess. Onyx broke at the* furlong post and in a fighting finish Header wore down Renegade, to win by a neck. Sonoma King was two lengths away third, then Silver Sea who was bracketed with the winner. Silver Sea. lost much ground at the start, otherwise she must have gone close to winning. Gay Crusader, Triangle, Princess Onyx, and Tiny Guy were next to finish. Sonoma King carried £lso£, Princes?. Onyx £lo3£, and Walter Wrack £97.

Rewai led all the way in the Belfast Handicap, and won comfortably. He was attended early by Handicapper, Midshipmaid and Paragon. The lastnamed was going scratchily. At the end of half a mile the order was the same, and they were followed by Starvale, Gay Lister and Full Hand. Ironside was 50 yards out of his ground at this stage. Rewai led into the straight from Midshipmaid, Handicapper, Sky Wink, Paragon, and Gay Sister. Rewai was the winner by

‘a length from Midshipmaid, and Ironside made a fine bid to finish third three lengths away, a head in front of Sky Wink. Handicapper, Paragon, Gay Sister, and Don Wrack were next. Moana Tama was never prominent, but Ironside was impressive. The Starvale-Grand Author bracket was favourite with £l3l, Ironside hud £llll and Rewai £lOO. William Tell made fairly easy work of the Burwood Handicap. Smoke Screen was first away, but Grand Finale reached the front, leaving the straight, and showed the way at the

end of half a. mile to Smoke Screen, Gunmetal, Golden Diyect and William Tell. With a mile covered, Grand Finale was on terms with Golden Direct, and in close attendance were William Tell. Smoke Screen, Jolly Wave, Gunmetal, and Harold Denver, with the rest bunched. About six lengths separated the first and last horse half a mile from home, where Rey Spec moved up on the outside.

William Tell was first into the straight froih Golden Direct, Jolly Wave, Smoke Screen, and Rey Spec. Wiliam Tell won easing up by two lengths from Golden Direct, who beat Rey Spec by a length. Jolly Wave was a head away fourth, then Smoke Screen, Harold Denver and Gunmetal. Grand Finale stopped with three furlongs to go. William Tell Smoke Screen (£278) and Rey Spec (£268) were favoured.

Lone Derby won the Seaview Handicap from start to finish, and had something in hand. When they reached the stands Grand Author fell, and Lone Derby was followed out of the straight by Garry Thorpe, Blandford, Eddystone, Golden Cross and Ezywurk. Down the back Ezywurk and Colene Parrish moved up and into the straight the order was Lone Derby, Ezywurk, Blandford, Colene Parrish, and Golden Cross. Blandford broke when challenging Lone Derby, and he completely stopped Young Travis, who was finishing very fast and would certainly have been second. Colene Parrish came strongly on the outer* but was' three lengths behind Lone Derby, with Ezywurk half a length away third. Blandford was fourth, and the next to arrive were Golden Cross, Young Travis and Camera. Among those that lost ground at the start were Bide-a-wee, Blondie, Summit, Cam Dillon, Azure and Sky Wink.

■ Favourites were the Eddystone— Summit bracket £327, Bide-a-wee £2394, and Colene Parrish £235. Great Antrim, favourite for the Dash Handicap, was well placed all the way to the straight, where he closed up. He looked very fit, and it was surprising that his connections were not given the opportunity of explaining his indifferent performance. 'Guyziah was first out from Great Antrim, Little Victor, and Ayr Lass. Great Thought took charge at the end of six furlongs and led into the straight from Captain Wrack, Agile, Morello and Betty Wrack. The lastua<ned finished at a great rate, but failed by a head to catch Great Thought. Agile was three lengths away third, Morello fourth, and then Guyziah, Elvo and Captain Wrack. Antrim had £3534, Agile £2861, Morello £277L and Great Thought £ 220. Sea Gift, favourite for the SpringHandicap, went a listless race, and she was another whose performance called for an inquiry. At no stage did she make a forward move. Germanicus led out, but Real Boy took charge entering the back, only to break soon after and drop right out. Norman Fox then was in front, and at the mile he was showing the way to Ruin, Amonos, Germanicus, Honeymoon, Resound and Silk Coat. Resound broke and dropped out three furlongs from home, and Norman Fox led into the straight from Ruin, Honeymoon, Germanicus and Amonos. ’ Norman Fox tired badly, and Ruin stayed on best to beat Germanicus by half a length. Honeymoon was three lengths back, with Amonos a fair fourth, and Sea Gift a poor fifth. Favourites were Sea Gift £414, Resound £242i, and Amonos £207. Tempest won the Wainoni Handicap very easily by three lengths. Chef broke down during the preliminary and was withdrawn. Worthy King led out from Coldwood, and they were attended at the end of two furlongs by Worthy Queen, Pronto Bingen, Jolly Wave, Nimbus, Sure and Some Guy. At the half-mile post Worthy King broke and interfered with practically the whole field. Sure and Lord Leslie were the worst sufferers, both being sent back irretrievably. Worthy Queen led into the straight from Morning Sun, Tempest, Pronto Bingen and Cloudy Range. Tempest soon put the issue beyond doubt. Worthy Queen tired badly, Pronto Bingen beating Jolly Wave by a length for second place. Cloudy Range was fourth, followed by Nimbus. Tempest carried £244, Cloudy Range £216 and Sure £196. Smoke Screen began fast in the mile saddle, but Captain Wrakc took charge entering the back and led into the straight from Elvo, Betty Wrack, Smoko Screen, Ayr Lass and Aristotle. Captain Wrack stopped to a walk, and Elvo always held the measure of Betty Wrack to win by a length. Smoke Screen was four lengths away third, Ayr Lass fourth, then Aristotle and Princess Thea. The last-named broke and lost half-a-dozen lengths at the end of three furlongs.

Favourites were Betty Wrack £564, Elvo £3474, and Princess Thea £3174.
