CONVICTS ESCAPE BY SEWER
FIGHTING WITH RATS. PHILADELPHIA, July 23. By crawling through a sewer half a mile long and fighting against . swarms of huge rats, five convicts i escaped from the State penitentiary , here last evening. During exercise L the men took the guards by surprise, , and, diving into a pool, disappeared I into /the wide sewer. The next seen of them was when they emerged from a man-hole in a • street crowded with women shoppers, who were terrified at seeing five men with scarcely any clothing left coming out of the ground. The police pursued the fugitives, but only captured one.
