SERPENT IN PULPIT

PREACHER NEAR TO DEATH. SYLVIA (N. Carolina), Augi/it 13. Albert Teester, a “Holiness” preacher waved a rattlesnake in his pulpit on the previous Sunday to prove the truth of the biblical exhortation, “Thou shalt pick up serpents.” Yesterday the preacher conducted services as usual, though in a weak state, having been near to death all the week. The snake had twice bitten Teester on an arm. He refused medical treatment, and his arm swelled and burst. His tongue also swelled until it nearly choked him. But Teester improved until he was able .to hobble round the cabin in which his wife died, because she refused medical aid in child-birth.
