PUBLIC BEQUESTS
MADE BY DR. COLLINS. [PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] 1 WELLINGTON, August 31. ) A number of generous charitable ; and public gifts are provided for in - the will of the late Dr. W. E. Collins, j C.M.G., M.L.C., Wellington, who died 5 on August 11. The will provides for the following charitable and public gifts, subject to prior life interest: (a) £250 to New Zealand Branch of the British . Medical Association at Wel--1 lington, as a contribution to its New i Zealand Medical Benevolent Fund, l (b) £250 to the Otago University for l the Medical School, (c) £5OO to the l Victoria University College, Wellingi ton to be invested, and the net annual l income appropriated each year for the ; encouragement of English literature; (d) £5OO to Victoria-University Colllege, Wellington, to be invested, and the net income appropriated each year for the encouragement of loyalty to the sovereign and patriotism. The nursery of Owen Street, Wellington is forgiven £lOO of a sum owing by it to the testator. Subject to a prior life interest, some valuable works of art, China, pictures are given to the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts at Wellington, upon certain conditions for transfer subsequently to the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum. St. Paul’s pro-cathedral also benefits under the will. For many years, Dr. Collins took a keen interest in the New Zealand Red Cross Society in which he had held an executive position in 1931. He deposited with the Public Trustee, the sum of £7OOO to be held upon the following trusts: (a) Income from £5OOO and sums added to it (less portion of income to be applied in interests of Junior Red Cross of New Zealand, including publication of Junior Red Cros Journal); (b) income from £lOOO and sums added to it (less portion of income to be accumulated for defined period) to be applied by the executive committee of the National Red Cross Society of New Zealand in providing for the immediate relief for persons in New Zealand suffering from the consequence of disaster or calamity due to earthquake, flood, or other forces of nature; (c) income from £lOOO and sums added to it (less portion of income to be accumulated for defined period) to be applied by executive committee of National Red Cross Society of New Zealand in interests of the country. The second of these benefactions was made public in the life time of Dr. Collins. At his express request, the remaining two were not disclosed in his lifetime, he being averse to publicity being given to them. The Board Which will determine how the income available from the fund of the £5OOO first mentioned is to be applied, is to consist of five members with the Public Trustee as chairman.
