CUSTOMS Customs duties collected at Greyrnouth last month totalled £2923/17/8, and sales tax £1,704/4/6, as compared with £1907/11/9, and £1274/10/10 respectively, during the corresponding month of last year. The total collections at Greymouth in August were £8636/11/2, as compared with £8348 2/4 in August, 1933. , RAINFALL FIGURES During the month of August ended yesterday, rain fell on 23 days for a total of 10.20 inches, the maximum fall for any one day being 1.57 ins. oh August 16. In,the corresponding month of last year the total rainfall was 7.08 ins. falling on 14 days, the maximum for any one day being I.4ins. oh August 3. SHIPPING. During the month of August 23 vessels aggregating 11,815 tons entered the port of Greymouth, as compared with 25 vessels (14,063 tons) during the corresponding month of last year. Twenty-seven vessels sailed from the port during the month, aggregating 15,597 tons, compared with 24 departures (13,672 tons) in August last year. DUNEDIN STATISTICS. DUNEDIN, August 31. Customs returns for the month of August for the port of Otago show a general increase in most sections. Following are the figures for the month, with the figures for the corresponding peridd last month in parentheses: — Customs, £67,428/5/8 (£48,686/18/11); beer duty, £17,295 11/3 (£17,629/16/9); sales tax, £21,167/3/7 (£15,777/2/7); petrol tax, £12,121/16/- (£11,622/17/6); tyre tax, £1,265/13/5 (£313/8/-). Returns for the past eight month of the year, compared with the same period last year, are as follow: —Customs, £439,841/11/8 (£385,078/13/3); beer duty, £158,874/6/2 (£139,982 13/2); sales tax, £160,124/12/4 £83,169/0/6); petrol tax, £108,448 3/4 (£101,452/15/6); tyre tax, £5,556 5/- (£4,899/11/-). The return of births, deaths and marriages for the past month show a slight decrease in the number of births, and increase in deaths and marriages compared with the corresponding month of last year. The returns compared with those for August last year in parentheses; are: Births 111 (124), deaths Hl (89), marriages 57 (46).
