The temporary paralysis of the United States cotton textile industry became seemingly inevitable last night when efforts to avert a general strike collapsed. The textile manufacturers spurned the Federal Government’s offer to attend a peace meeting here with the Labour leaders. The Strike Committee at once prepared to dispatch, before noon on Thursday, formal orders for a walkout of nearly half a million workers. Work in the cotton textile mills will probably cease operations on Friday night. The strike call is likely to be for Tuesday morning, that is, the first working day after the Labour Day week-end. . An upheaval also is threatened in another great industry, that of the* cotton garment manufacturers. The manufacturers have defied a Presidential order calling for a 36 h6.urfe’'.week, instead of a 40 hour week, without decreased pay for 200,000 employees. The workers in this industry are now threatening a general strike unless the Presidential order is obeyed on October 1, when it becomes effective. STOPPAGE ON SATURDAY. WASHINGTON, August 30, The general strike of the United States cotton textile works called for Thursday, will become effective at midnight on Saturday.
