A discussion on the pronunciation i of the word “ski” occurred at the . annual meeting of the Ruapehu Ski Club, held at the Chateau (states the > “New Zealand Herald”). The secre- > tary, Mr J. C. Rennie, read an opinion s i from Mr H. Selignan, editor of the . Ski Club of Great Britain’s publica- , jtion, “Ski Notes and Queries,” in , which it was stated that the ■word should be pronounced “she.” The • word was borrowed bodily from the Norwegian and should be pronounced as in Norway. If one were to sound the k, to be logical the word must be pronounced “sky.” Mr R. Syme said it was absurd to claim that the Swiss pronunciation “skee” was authentic, because the sport had been introduced even in Australia before Switzerland. A resolution was passed that the club affirm the correct pronunciation of the word to be “she.”
