ALLEGED DOPING OF PETROL

A CLAIM SETTLED. LONDON, July 19. A settlement was announced before Mr Justice Horridge in the Kings Bench Division yesterday of the action in which a suggestion was made that a motor-car about to take part in.a Monte Carlo rally was tampered with by the placing of granulated sugar in the petrol tank. All the people concerned were interested in the motor trade. Messrs D. E. Harris. Great Portland Street, W., claimed damages, alleging a conspiracy on the part of the defendants, Mr A. J. Guppy Ltd., of Great Portland Street, and their salesman, Mr J. A. Lincoln. The plaintiff’s case was that all three defendants called at their showrooms where the car —a nine horsepower Singer—was on view the afternoon before the endurance test, and that it was tampered with. The defence was a denial of any conspiracy, and a plea that, if Mr Lincoln (as was suggested) put any sugar in the petrol tank —this was denied —it was without the knowledge or consent of the other two defendants. Mr Rowland Thomas, K.C. (for defendants), said he had considered the case and the evidence already given, and. on that, had given the defendants certain advice, which they had accepted. There would be judgment for Messrs Harris against the three defendants for £125 and costs.
