Nuthall defeated Miss Mary Zita Jacoby (not Miss Helen Jacobs) as cabled yesterday. In the second round of the men’s singles, Menzel, claiming a knee injury, defaulted to Eugene McCauliffe, of Yonkers, New York, who is ranked as 24th in the United States. Menzel was down 0/4 in the third and decisive sets. Menzel had taken the first one 6/4. McCauliffe took the second 12/10. Others entering the third round are Lett, Tidball, Mako, Budge, Buxby and Wilde. NEW YORK, August 28. There was no tennis at Rye, to-day, owing to rain.
