AMERICA’S CUP

SELECTION OF DEFENDER [BY CABLE PRESS ASSN. COPYRIGHT.] NEWPORT (Rhode Island), August 27. The yacht “Rainbow,” Mr. Harold Vanderbilt’s new candidate for the defence of the America Cup, to-day defeated the leading aspirant for that honour, the “Yankee” skippered by Mr. Charles Francis Adams, by three minutes seven seconds over a. thirty miles triangular course. This result has somewhat complicated the task of the committee empowered with the selection ot the defender. It was the “Yankee’s” first defeat of the final trials and it has temporarily placed the “Rainbow” in the lead so far as the trials are concerned. The Rainbow now has won three races and lost one. She has beaten Mr. Frederick Prince’s “Weetamoe,” which is now eliminated. She .had beaten the Yankee once. The Yankee has defeated the Rainbow and the Weetamoe, and has lost to the Rainbow.
