SURGEON’S £105 BILL

CLERGYMAN TOLD NOT TO PAY. The Bishop of Worcester, presiding recently, at the annual meeting of the Poor Clergy Relief Corporation, said that a clergyman sent his son to a very able surgeon for a mastoid operation. Knowing that the clergyman’s income was not more than £350, the surgeon charged 100 guineas. “I told the man not to pay it, and I hope that I was not wrong,” added the bishop. The clergyman told him that the surgeon had threatened to take the matter to court, and to that he (tho Bishop) replied, “Let it be taken into court. He will never be able to hold his head up in his town again.” As .a matter of fact, the clergyman had to pay in all £75 to the surgeon. The Bishop remarked that the medical profession had always shown the greatest kindness and generosity to the clergyand this was a rare case.
