WEEK-END GAMES There were only two matches played under the jurisdiction of the Westland Football Association over the week-end, when on Saturday, Greymouth seniors journeyed to Dobson, and were defeated by the home team in a Westland Cup match by two goals to nil, and,' on Sunday, at Cobden, Waiuta and Runanga seniors played a friendly game, the former team winning with a last-minute goal, by three goals to two. All lower grade fixtures were postponed on Saturday. DOBSON 2, GREYMOUTH 0. Considering the adverse state of the weather on Saturday, there was quite a good attendance at Dobson when, after an even and interesting encounter, the home team defeated Grevmouth bv two goals to nil. Light rain fell occasionally during the game, and the greasy ground was treacherous underfoot. Considering the conditions, both teams played as well, as could be expected. Of the winning team, Rush, Cowan and Erskine showed to the best advantage, while Hunter, Rutherford and Hall were the pick of Greymouth’s eleven. The teams were: — Dobson: —Pickering; King, Erskine; Short, Richardson, White; Hamilton, Cowan, Rush, Nordstrom, Coutts. ' Greymouth:— Stitt; Sharp, Hall; McNeil, Rutherford, Wood; Restieaux, Timlin, Martin, Hunter, Smyth. Referee: Mr. A. R. Hamill.
Greymouth won the toss and Dobson kicked off. Timlin intercepted, and placed the Blues on attack, Erskine clearing. Richardson placed upfield nicely for Rush to gain a corner, which was cleared by Sharp. At the other end, Hunter shot narrowly over the bar. A free kick to Dobson saw Short piace correctly and Rush received to test Stitt. Coutts crossed, and Hamilton came in from the right to send in for Stitt to save. Coutts again placed into goal, and Rush, meeting the ball with his head, netted from a couple of yards out. Dobson 1, Greymouth 0.
Play swung out to Greymouth’s left, where Short relieved by returningplay well down-field. Hall cleared well from an attack on Dobson’s right, and Sharp cleared a further x attack on the left. Richardson sent in a good shot, which Hall stopped at. the expense of a corner. Martin gained ground down the centre before passing to the left, where King made a good clearance. Smyth crossed in a handy position but Erskine cleared a dangerous position. Play was in mid-field at half time with the score: Dobson 1, Greymouth 0. On resuming, Greymouth attacked on the right, Erskine clearing. Dobson broke away, and Hamilton crossed for Stitt to save, but Rush, comingin, scored a nice goal. Dobsn 2, Greymuth 0. Richardson sent in a long shot which went narrowly by, and, at the other end, Rutherford sent in a similar shot. Timlin sent Martin away, King stopping a promisingmovement. Coutts put in a run down the wing, and shot for Stitt to save. A determined attack by the Greymouth forwards bustled Pickering into conceding a corner, which White cleared. McNeil tried a long shot, which Pickering saved. Short sent Hamilton away, Hall clearing. Nordstrom and Coutts worked down Dobson’s left, where Sharp cleared. Rutherford got the ball out nicely to Smyth, who crossed for Erskine to clear. Timlin passed to McNeil and his cross was headed narrowly over the bar by Hunter as the whistle blew for time with the score Dobson 2, Greymouth
WAIUTA DEFEAT RUNANGA Playing at Cobden, yesterday, Waiuta showed good form on the greasy ground and snatched victory from Runanga during the last minute of play, the score being three goals to two. Prominent for the winning team were Douglas, Jack Young and Luke, while of the Runanga team, Craig, Sharp and McLean played well. The teams were: — Waiuta: —Page; Keenan, Douglas; Christie, Jack Young, Eckersley; Jas. Young, Coulson, Parkinson, Luke, Joblin. Runanga:—Ennor; Wick, McLean; Pattinson, Cameron. Cowe; Sharp, Craig, Malpass, White, Crowe. Referee:—Mr. J. Smith. Runanga were first on attack, Sharp taking the ball well down the right wing before crossing for Runanga to gain a fruitless corner. Plaj r was reversed and Joblin went down Waiuta’s wing, but ran the ball over the goal line. Parkinson sent in a long shot, wtyich went just outside the upright. Good work by Parkinson and Luke again saw Joblin take the ball over the goal-line. Luke went down the centre on his own, and sent in a. good shot, which Ennor cleared at the expense of a corner. White then conceded a further corner, which was cleared to Malpass, who went through for Douglas to relieve with a good tackle. Sharp took play down his wing, but Douglas was safe, and made a good clearance. Christie placed nicely up to Coulson, who sent out to Jas. Young, McLean saving his cross. White sent Crowe away, but his cross was well intercepted by Keenan, who returned play to mid-field. Parkinson obtained possession and sent out to Joblin who crossed back, to Parkinson and he sent in a grand drive which hit the upright, and bounced behind. Half time was blown shortly after, with no score registered. Shortly after the resumption, Malpass missed a good opportunity from close in. Luke made good headway, before transferring to Parkinson, back to Luke for McLean to deflect the ball to Ennor, who saved at the expense of a corner. Malpass sent out to Sharp, who shot for Page to save. A further shot by Crowe was saved by Page and then Craig sent on to Malpass in a handy position for him to open Runanga’s account with a lowdrive.
Page saved from Sharp, out from a melee in the goalmouth. White put Runanga two up. Good work by the Young brothers resulted in the ball being shot by. Coulson tested Ennor with a good shot and Jack Young obtained in midfield and beat several men to score with a low drive. A brilliant solo e-fort. Waiuta equalised immediately, when Jack Young sent out to Joblin, to Luke, who beat Ennor with a ground shot. Runanga pressed and Page' made a good clearance from a melee in the goalmouth. Sharp returned play and crossed nicely for Page again to save. With a few minutes left for play, Waiuta attacked, and Jack Young broke through the Runanga defence before passing to Luke, who took the ball to within a foot of the goal line, from where he kicked info the corner of the net to make the final score: Waiuta 3, Runanga 2.
