COMMUNITY SINGING.

[to the editor,] Sir,—l notice a letter signed “Songster” in Friday’s “Star,” advocating the holding of “community sings,” the proceeds of collections to be devoted to the ,Mayor’s Relief of Distress Fund. As other towns can make a success of similar functions, surely Greymouth can do the same. The public and musical people should be able to raise a good sum during the next three or four months if the functions are well organised. The effort should be well worth while, and as a result I feel sure a good community spirit among our residents would be fostered. I would suggest that a meeting be convened, and the matter fully discussed by the various sections of the community. A committee of suitable people consisting of ladies and gentlemen might then be formed to give the project a trial. A collection could be made at the door or in the' hall, with the understanding that not anyone would be compelled to donate. Short programmes could no doubt be arranged by local artists with the community sings to follow. I noticed that the sings were taken up with great enthusiasm on the occasion of the concerts given by Derry’s Band. Surely with all our array of local talent and enterprise by our business people, petty differences of thought’on various community matters could be dropped meantime and a real community effort by all classes and creeds inaugurated for the benefit of the poor families in distress. Don’t let Greymouth be considered an inhospitable town. As Christians it is our bounden duty to help those in distress. Even though Greymouth might be the last town to help in this way, it is never too late to mend our ways. What are the three graces? Can we drop self-interests and be charitable for a time?—I am etc., SONGSTER No. 2. i
