G.T.C. MEETING THIS WEEK.

STAGE SET FOR GOOD RACING.

On Wednesday next, the Greymouth Trotting Club will open its winter meeting, at Victoria Park, the fixture concluding on Saturday. Having secured satisfactory acceptances from owners and trainers who stable goodclass horses, the Club can confidently look forward to a successful meeting. The decision to revert to the single totalisator will meet with general approval, for West Coast patrons of the sport prefer that system of betting, to the win and place. The programme is an attractive one, valuable stakes being offered, and the distance of races ranging from one, to two miles. For the first time for years, there will not be a saddle race. It will be the final trotting meeting for the 1933-34 season, and several trainers have taken the opportunity .offered to try out their charges prior to the big meeting at Addington next month. The general public will welcome the absence of large fields. Providing there are a sufficient number of starters to return two dividends, that is all that concerns the investor. Large fields have much to condemn them from the viewpoint of the punter, and the only benefit from them is in the form of nomination and acceptance fees to the/ club. Seven starteijs. make an ideal field, for possible interference in the running of a race is then reduced co a small chance. There are investors who refrain from betting on a race that has a large number, of starters, mainly because they realise that should their chosen horse be locked in on the rails, and surrounded by others, his chances of getting out of the “pocket” without having to’lose a lot of ground, are nil. There will be two or three fields on Wednesday, that will contain many starters, but none so large as to be termed unweiklly.

That the public appreciate the efforts of the Greymouth Trotting Club is evidenced by the large attendances that patronise the fixtures. But for the limitation of public spending power during the past four years , the Club, which has always provided heavy stakes, would have had most profitable 'meetings. With an improvement in working conditions on the West Coast, during recent weeks, and brighter prospects ahead, the receipts from this Week’s meeting should exceed the expenditure of the Club. There is no apprehension on the part of the public, as to the quality of the racing that will take place at the fixture. The track is in excellent order, and it will only need to be fine on the days of the meeting, to provide fast going. Many of the best of New Zealand’s foremost reinsmen will he present on the track, and although there are some new-comers among the horses with engagements, the others have their deeds of this season to assist the investors in arriving at a decision for each race. Canterbuiy stables will supply most of the starters, Westport stables being represented by the trotter Sandy N, and the pacers Bingen Palm and Fearless, a trio expected to do well. A review of the prospects ot canuidates for Wednesday’s'racing wiJ be published in to-morrow’s “Star. tne Railway Department has arranged foi i thb delay of trains, to suit country patrbns, on both days of the fixture.
