To-day’s Racing News

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. July 21. —Hawke’s Bay. July 26. —Waimate District. July 26, 28. —Poverty Bay. July 28. —South Canterbury. July 28.— Manawatu.

Great Recovery: The Wellington Racing Club experienced a. great recoveyry, financially, on its winter meeting, just concluded. After the second day's racing, the totalisator figures, in comparison with last year, were clown £8(290. On Saturday, a large crowd invested freely, and the returns came from well down, to show a tidy increase of £28767. for the meeting. In view of the fact that first favourites fared badly throughout the three days of racing, the figures suggest that the public spending power has increased.

Winter Hurdles Winner: Rasouli, winner of the Trentham, and Winter Hurdles last week, was the biggest stake-earner at the meeting. He is an Australian-bred gelding by Barnard —Gipsy’s Warning, and is approaching his eighth year. None of his early form, however, was nearly up to his latest at Trentham. Mercian Prince:

The only other double-winner at Trentham was Mercian Prince, a noted mud-lark. This four-year-old, by Mercian King from Royal Song, was a solid favourite on Thursday, but was allowed to go out at a good price on Saturday, and repeated his earlier success, by galloping away from the field. He was ridden by L. G. Morris on Thursday, but A. E. Ellis had the mount on Saturday. Morris rode the first favourite Red Rufus, into second place.

Hunting Song Horses: A phenomenal run of success was scored by Hunting Song horses at Trentham last Thursday. They took the first five races, then finished the sixth success for the day, with Slippery. On the first day, another Hunting Song progeny in Vocal won, making the total successes for the meeting seven. Hunting Songs have always been partial to soft going. More Than Useful:

The three-year-old gelding, Square Acre, by Acre from a Spalpeen mare, has come prominently before the public within the last two weeks. He won his first race (in his second start) at Dannevirke, and has now followed up with a meritorious win in good company, at Trentham on Saturday. He is more than useful, and on breeding, should follow his flat racing, with efforts over the fences.

Likely to Make Good: The three-year-old Musketoon gelding Aramis has not been asked to do any serious tasks since he raced at the Great Northern meeting. His trainer, R, S. Bagby, is just giving this maiden the right of work to fit him for the new racing season. As Aramis has had only one race it is rather early to gauge his future prospects.

Gigantic Retires: The gelding Gigantic, who was being trained at Matamata, has broken down, and is not to be persevered with. Gigantic was a consistent placegetter among the hacks of the province. Although ho was only twice successful he filled second place no fewer than fourteen tinies, and was third on several other occasions. His breakdown is unfortuante for his lady owner, Mrs. N. Hastings.
