LONDON, July 14.
Flight-Lieutenant Schofield, a member of the Schneider Trophy team of 1926, flying a Monospar, won the King’s Cup, averaging a speed of 134.16 miles per hour over the six circuits of 23J miles. Thomas Rose, flying a Hawke, was second, averaging 147.76 miles hourly. L. Lipton, flying a Moth, was third averaging 124.16 miles hourly. Schofield said the conditions were terribly rough. He had a job to keep his seat. Fourteen competitors qualified for the semi-final in the King’s Cup air race. Three ex-winners of the Cup, Captains De Haviland, Hope, and Broad, were eliminated. Prince George’s Percival Gull, piloted by Percival, failed to qualify in its heat. The plane started from scratch in torrential rain, and did 212 miles hourly most of tlie time, which was twenty miles an hour better than the Cup record, but that only enabled it to finish fifth. The final lap was spoiled by further torrential thunderstorms.
Mrs Patterson was the only woman pilot. She previously had brilliantly won her heat, but was forced down by the weather, and retired.

The Aberdonian taxied across the aerodrome but failed to rise clear of a bank and toppled over, throwing the passengers into a heap. The plane burst into flames. Most of the passengers scrambled out, smashed the side of the plane and dragged out Miss Cable, whose hair was on fire, alsp another passenger, who was pinned under the fuselage.
