WAGE RESTORATION
FARMERS’ OPPOSITION. [per press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, June 27. Three bodies in Christchurch to-day considered the subject of the restoration of wage and salary cuts. The Hospital Board discussed a proposal that 5 per cent, of the wages be restored to the lower-paid employees. Tho motion was lost, on the casting vote of the Chairman.
The Waimate County Council, which has about twenty employees, decided to restore the 10 per cent. cut. An amendment to restore only 5 per cent, was defeated. The Executive of the North Canterbury Farmers’ Union carried a iesolution protesting against the action of the local bodies in restoring the wages. The speakers argued that favours were .being given to an already favoured few, and that the money available should be used to give permanent. employment, to those who are on a bare subsistence wage. It was stated, also, that the times were not sufficiently improved to permit of any increased expenditure. N.S.W. PUBLIC SERVICE. SYDNEY, June 28.
