COBDEN FIRE BRIGADE

ANNUAL REUNION. The annual reunion of the Cobden Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in the Brigade room last evening, Captain T. Gilmour presiding over a good atendance of firemen, honorary members and visitors.

A pleasant evening was spent in song, toast and story, and during the evening two-year service bars were presented to the following:—Captain Gilmour (15 years), Foreman Sweetman (15 years), Fireman Harding (11 years), Secretary Anderson (9 years), Fireman J. Allan (7 years). The various speakers to the' different toasts expressed definite views that -when Cobden merged into Greymoujth, the Cobden Brigade should be allowed to retain a separate identity. The point was emphasised that it would be very difficult for a Greymouth brigade to be early on the spot in case of a fire. It was suggested that immediate steps be taken in the matter. Musical items were given by Messrs A. Richardson, T. Clark, L. Anderson, W. Delaney and H. Anderson, while an orchestra comprising Messrs J. Allan (piano), L. Abbie, J. Duncan, M. D. Fogarty (violin), D. Abbie (clarionet) and S. Palmer (cornet) played several selections, which were much enjoyed. Apologies for absence 'were received from Treas. Moore, Foreman Hornsby, Firemen J. Brailsford and G. Williams, Messrs A. H. McKane and 0. H. Brailsford.

On Monday evening the Brigade took the opportunity of organising a surprise party to the residence pf Mr and Mrs G. Allan, who are leaving the district. The opportunity was taken of making a presentation to Mrs Allan, who had been an enthusiastic member of the Brigade’s Ladies’ Committee for a number of years. During the evening Secretary Anderson, on behalf of the Brigade, presented Fireman G. Allan with a handsome clock on the occasion of his approaching marriage, and as a token of esteem from his fellow firemen. All regretted his removal from their midst.
