NEW GUINEA GOLD
EXPEDITION’S PROGRAMME. [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] SYDNEY, May 16. Au expedition which is going to New Guinea at Lhe end of this month, mainly to search for gold, will be headed by Captain A. J. Kendrick, a South African engineer and scientist, who already is familiar with most of the country to be explored. Other members include Mr. Gordon Coghill, and Mr. K. Thompson. The latter is a mercantile marine officer. He will be assistant navigator and field geologist. The expedition is being accompanied by three experienced miners and prospectors, who will act as general assistants. and also by a cook and shiphand. An auxiliary schooner has been purchased, and renamed the "Voortrekker.” Twenty native hoys will be signed on in New Guinea. The areas to be searched are described as being among the richest in mineral resources in the world. A close investigation will be made of the foothills of the Sir Arthur Gordon Ranges. The party, which expects to be absent for eighteen months, will encounter some of the most hostile natives at the Kakori River, from which, ihev will penetrate to the interior. Ims decided to send additional men to Iho goldfields under its prospecting scheme, under which 1231 are now working, of whom three hundred have made good, ami are operating their own mines, after having repaid all of the moneys advanced them by the Government, and having also produced gold io the value of £6OOO.
