Selby loft, this morning, foi Auckland. Mr. J. Gieseking returned fron Christchurch by last night’s train. Mrs A. M. Carroll was a passenger by this morning’s express to Christchurch. Mrs W. Fowler, who has been visiting the West Coast, left, this morning, on return to Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs S. I. Anderson were passengers by this morning’s express on return to Timaru. Mr. W. Murphy, Runanga, left, this morning, for Christchurch, to undergo medical treatment. A London cablegram stated that Mr. Forgan Smith, Labour Premier of Queensland, had half an hour's audience with the King. The funeral of the late Mrs Louisa Jane Duske, of Blackball, took place, this afternoon, at Karoro cemetery. Archdeacon J. A. Jermyn conducted the services. The engagement is announced of Greta Frances, only daughter of Mrs C. M. Magee and the late Mr. S. V. Magee, of Reefton, to Dr. R. A. Marshall, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs R. F. Marshall, of Dunedin. Mr. and Mrs J. G. Coates and party are expected to arrive at Greymouth this evening. They will proceed tomorrow, on a visit to South Westland. A welcome will be extended to Mr. Coates by the Mayor (Mr. J. W. Greenslade), at 5 p.m. The death is announced of Mr. Charles Chavannes, aged 80, one of Wanganui’s oldest citizens. In his earlier days he was famous through- ; out the Dominion for skill as a billiardist, gun club shooting, and bowl- < ing, and was also prominent in racing circles. —Press Assn. ‘ The death took place yesterday, after a long illness, of Jack, only son of Mr. and Mrs J. M. Vial, of Beckenham, and formerly of Greymouth. His uncle, Mr. E. M. Good, leaves for Christchurch, to-night, to attend the i funeral.

The death is announced from Christchurch, of Captain Robert Kirk, aged 90, formerly well-known in the coastal trade. He spent his early days in Dunedin, and later at Nelson. At one time he owned the schooner, John Bell, wrecked near Wellington.—Press Assn.

A Sydney cablegram started that Rev. Joseph Lundie has been elected Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New South Wales. He was a former Moderator in Queensland.

Mr. G. V. Hudson, astronomer, was last night honoured by the Royal Society of New Zealand at Wellington, and presented -with a special Sidey Medal and cheque for his work for science.—Press Assn.

Miss Sybil Anderson, who will leave shortly for Christchurch, to take up a position on the nursing staff of the Christchurch Hospital, was, last evening, farewelled by a large number of friends at a social in Perotti Hall. The evening was spent in games and dancing, and the presentation of an initialled leather liat-box was made to the guest. During the evening, items were contributed by Misses M. Clayton, and M. Beban, Messrs. G. Brown, I. Elder, J. Joyce, and the Cobden orchestra. A lucky spot was won by Miss Anderson and Mr. S. Wheeler.
