CHURCH ON FIRE

DAMAGE AT CHRISTCHURCH. [FEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 16. Damage totalling several hundreds of pounds was caused this morning by a fire in St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Colombo Street, Sydenham. Prompt action by the brigade conlined the damage principally to the rear of the building, but the loss to the church is considerable, as two pianos were affected by lire and water. A Communion set presented at the foundation of the church in 1850 was blackened by the flames. Records were charred, and the walls separating the kitchen from the vestry and the rafters were destroyed. The church proper, though filled with smoke, escaped damage. The cause of the lire is unknown, but it is beloved that it. started in Hie kitchen, where supper had been prepared for a meeting last evening.
