MRS. JACOBSEN’S WIN WELLINGTON, May 15. There was great jubilation among members of the Miramar Ladies’ Golf Club to-day, when news came through that Mrs Jacobsen had defeated Miss Molly Gourley in the first round of the British Women’s Golf Championship. Mrs Jacobsen’s performance in defeating such a redoubtable player as Miss Gourley, who was the English ladies’ champion in 192 G and 1929, and the French open champion on three occasions, the Belgian open champion twice, and the Swedish champion in 1932, was oustanding. . As Miss Vivian Upham, Mrs Jacobsen learnt her golf as a member of the Miramax’ Club, and owes much of
her success to the sound coaching of A. J. Shaw, the New Zealand professional champion. Starting oil by winning the Karori ladies’ championship as a girl of 16, among her successes can be numbered the Rotorua open championship twice, and Napier open championship. She was runner-up at the Miramar open and Wellington provincial championships in 1917. She has a. very pretty style, with a nice fiat, swing, which enables her to control her ball well in the wind.
U.S.A. KEENNESS LONDON, May 15. Grace Amory, America’s sole competitor, was criticised because she practised for an hour before the match, with a professional specially brought to the course. It is expected that the Ladies’ Golf Union will discuss the matter with a view to obtaining a decision.
