The death occurred yesterday of Mr. Joseph R. Whitaker, one of the best known educationalists in Auckland. For over 20 years he was Headmaster of the Mount Albert School.—Press Assn.

Th© death occurred at Christchurch yesterday of Mr. Horace Thompson, aftei* a brief illness. He formerly was a partner in the flrm of Milnei' and Thompson, and for some time was the Christchurch manager of Charles Begg and Co. Ltd. —Press Assn.

The King received in audience, Lord Tyrrel, upon his relinquishing his appointment as British Ambassador at Paris, and invested him with the insignia of the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath. —Official Wireless. Mr. R. Wild, of Hokitika, a member of the Canterbury Education Board, whilst inspecting a school in the Kaikoura district last, week, broke two ribs, through a fall from a horse. Since his admission to the Christchurch Hospital, his condition has become serious.

Messrs G. H. Mackley, General Manager of the New Zealand Railway Department, A. Wellstead, manager of the Commercial Department, P. A. Munro, secretary, and other depart-

mental officers, making a party of six, will arrive in Greymouth on Friday afternoon, from Christchurch, on a week’s inspection of the West Coast railways, including Westport, They will arrive in the general manager’s special rail-motor. Mr. A. De B. Brandon, who has been a director of the New Zealand Board of the A.M.P. Society for over 45 years, intends retiring from that position at the close of the present month. Mr. Brandon was appointed to the Board in 1888, and became Deputy Chairman in 1903, and since 1918 has been Chairman. Mr. N. S. Falla has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the New Zealand Directorate occasioned by Mr. Brandon’s retirement.—Press Assn.

The death occurred suddenly yesterday, at the residence of her son, Hastings, of Mrs Mary Stace, wife of Rev. W. Stace, of Hampden, and formerly of the Grey Valley, where he was vicar for a number of years. Deceased, who was on a visit to her son, was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs Thomas Franklin, of Greymouth. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Roy (Hastings), and Kenneth (Taumarunui), two sisters, Mrs H. Chalk and Mrs A. Hopkinson (both of Greymouth), and three brothers, Arthur (Ngakawau), Everard (Wellington) and Thomas (Christchurch); also three grand-children.
