ROYAL SOCIETY

LORD BLEDISLOE’S MESSAGE [per press association..] WELLINGTON. May 16. Being unable to be present, at the meeting of the Council of the Royal Society, Lord Bledisloe has sent a message of greeting and congratulation. He says that lie is disappointed his public engagements in the Auckland district prevent his attending the inaugural meeting of the Council of the

Royal Society, hitherto called the New Zealand Institute of which he is privileged to be Hon. Patron. He mentions that this is the 67th year of the Society’s useful existence, and in this year, “it becomes revitalised under a title more befitting to its status, and record of worthy achievement.” _ He says that if the application of science to human industrial operations has created a surplus of productive wealth, with resulting human impoverishment the fault lies not with the scientist, but the economists, financiers, industrialists, and above all the statesmen of the world. He expressed the hope that under the new appellation, the Society will not only augment its already high prestige, but. enjoy to an ever increasing extent, the confidence and respect of the community at large.
