STUDENTS’ PRANK

FOUNDATION STONE MOVED. Everything was ready for the laying of a foundation stone of the new wing of Trintiy College, Melbourne, by Archbishop Head recently—except that the stone itself was missing. The stone was left secure under lock and key, but in the morning it had vanished. Weighing Scwt, it is believed that the efforts of six men at least would have been required to move it to the spot in front of the wing where it was later found buried. As soon as the disappearance was discovered, a search was begun, and the work of inscribing a tablet on a new stone was hurriedly put in hand, '.rhe warden of Trinity College then received a telephone call informing him that, Ihe stone would be found buried in front of the building at the loot of the wall, in which it was to have been laid. A search there revealed the stone.

Investigations showed that during the night someone had forced the lock of a room in which the stone was resting, under verandah boards, and carried it more than 5 yards to the place where it was buried. When recovered, the stone was dirty and slightly chipped, but it was placed in position by Archbishop Head at the ceremony in the afternoon. It is believed that the disappearance of the stone and its burial were the outcome of a students’ prank.

Work on the new wing, which is parallel to Sydney Road, was begun in November last, and will be finished early next year. AVlien completed it will be of 4S rooms. There will be a study and a bedroom for 21 resident students. The cost of the work is estimated al .C32,ii(hJ. Trinity is Melbourne's oldest University College. It was opened in 1X72. '
