ROY’S LOW-WAGE PLEA [PEB PBESB ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. May 111. George Edward Hill. 18. charged with stealing £3/10/. from his employers, Armstrong and Springhall, and wilfully setting fire to the premises, pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence. ■ He told the .Justices that he was too poorly paid to clothe himself decently. He stole the money to buy clothes, and started the fire to cover the theft. Accused was a message boy, and was given a cheque to cash to pay fourteen, (small accounts, but paid none. He entered the office after business hours, and set fire to some paper. The premises were damaged to the extent of £l2O, and stock and fittings £1095.
The secretary of the company said that the boy’s wages were 12/6 a week*.
