GREY MINING EXECUTIVE. The Greymouth Mining Executive met. last evening, there being present: Messrs. J. W. Hannan (Chairman), J. Mulcare, J. W. Greenslade, A. Donnellan. .J. Jlyall, M. Keating (secretary), S. W. S. Strong (engineer), and R. B. Jackson (Unemployment Board’s reproseiitaf ive). The number of at present employed on the subsidised gold-prospect-ing .scheme in (ho district is 342, but a, good percentage of these men are on development work in the various areas. . ’ le won so this year, totals 3730 z. 3dwts. 12grs„ the monthly returns being as folow:—January, three weeks, 770 z. 15dwts. 18grs.; February, 81oz. (kiwis.; March, 112 oz. IGdwts.; April, lOloz. 2dwts. ISgrs. The Engineer reported as follows: — In the Mosquito Creek area, men are working throe shifts on No. 3 shaft, which is now down 200 feet. This shaft is timbered from top to bottom, and is really a credit, to the men

working on it. Tho objective is to obtain data, relative to the elevation of tho bottom of alluvial wash, so that tunnels may be driven in from either side.

In the Red Jacks area, several shafts have been put down, some showing fail - prospects. The deepest shaft is S 3 feet, timbered throughout. It is in the nature of trying out this I ground, to detect any leads, that the .work is being continued. At Kotuku and Atarau shafts have been put down, but the ground has proved very wet, requiring the use of pumps. The progress in these two areas will be reviewed at. the next meeting of tho executive. in tho Blackball area, two drives have been driven into virgin ground,

I one being 105 feet and the other 120 foot in to date. The area of virgin ground ahead warrants perseverance. There are several men prospecting for reefs in the Upper Moonlight district, and arrangements are in hand to erect a ball mill for crushing quartz samples, which will be obtained from these and other quartz-bearing areas. This mill is designed.on the same lines as that being used in the Thames district, under the Unemploymeht Board’s scheme, and will treat over one ton of ore in eight hours, thus, en-

aiding a good reliable trial to he made of any parcels of stone. Supervisor Barber, who is in charge of tho Maori Gully and New River ara, attended the meeting, and gave details concerning the progress made by tho 41 men in his area.
