ATHLETICS
EMPIRE GAMES CANDIDATE.
[PKB PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
WELLINGTON, April 19.
It was decided by the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association at a special meeting this afternoon to nominate P. J. Hackett (Auckland), the holder of the New Zealand High Jump championship title, as a candidate for inclusion in the New Zealand team for the British Empire Games. When, towards the end of last month, the Council nominated H. K. Brainsby (Auckland), T. G. Broadway (Canterbury), and J. E. Lovelock (Oxford University), it was considered that Hackett should under, go a further trial. This trial took place in Auckland on April 7, and April 14, when Hackett failed to clear six feet, his best jump on each occasion being sft lOAins. The Council had before it to-day a report from Mr V. Hugo, who was appointed to supervise the trial and a letter from Hackett who suggested himself, that, in view of his failure to clear the 6ft mark he should be dropped. Hackett said that it appeared that he would be unable to do 6ft again this season. He was very disappointed, but he hoped to do better during next athletic season. Appreciation was expressed of Hackett’s letter and the attitude that he had adopted, and it was decided to send a letter to him to that effect. The Council also had before it a request from Dunedin to reconsider the candidature of E. C. Brown, the Otago distance Tunner, The Council, however, did not favour his nomination.
