GREYMOUTH UNEMPLOYED.

(TO THE EDITOR.] Sir,—l would esteem it as a favoui if you would publish this, to warn tilt public of something that is intended to be carried out in the near future At Wednesday night’s general meeting of the Greymouth unemployed it was moved, and seconded and carried: That Messrs Conza and McGrath seeli an interview with Mr. Schaef, with s view to being granted the loan of his hall to hold a dance. I am led to be hove that, Mr. Schaef has. already given the unemployed a promise of the hall in their turn. He would no doubl he under the impression that any dance held, the proceeds would heli our local unemployed. Well, in this instance, the only way the local men will benefit will be very small (if any) The real reason for this intended dance, is that the proceeds go towards paying a debt we, as a branch, owe tc our district council of unemployed leaders. The remaining (proceeds (if any) to go into our branch funds which at present are at low tide. So no doubt, the public, as sane thinking people, will see, along with myself, that this dance, if granted, will not help to relieve any distress amongst our local unemployed. The only thing that this intended dance will do will be to provide funds for our leaders tc use, to lead us into a bigger mess than they have already done, which is hardly possible, I will admit. But, up tc date, we have had some costly lessons under so-called leadership. So ii this dance is held, T would ask. that those responsible have printed on the tickets what the proceeds are intended for, as the slogan “To help the unemployed,’’ has been exploited enough in the past. I may 7 remark, in passing, that only eleven members all told were present at the meeting, as, candidly speaking, the majority of the unemployed have turned tired of being misled: so they stay at home, and think for themselves. The chairman, at the close of the meeting, remarked on the poor attendance, saying he did not know the reason members did not attend the meetings. Well, here is the reason: Bad leadership in the past, bringing men out on strike. and after a few days’ idleness, telling them to go back, using the silly oft worn slogan “Retire with a united front to prepare again.' 1 The unemployed of Greymouth had support, unlimited from all people- in the town, but the leaders of the past only' killed the goose that laid the golden eggs, by their stupid actions while in office. We had control, to a large extent, of the Mayor’s Fund. Wo lost that. We had the Town Hall to run weekly dances. We lost that. These are two concessions we will never have again, and I can honestly say, we don’t deserve them. I have read in the local papers at different times the names of different tradespeople, such, as Mr. Blanchfield, the Dainty Store ,and Messrs. Shannon and Glen, who have sent donations of cakes to our relief depot. Well, as yet, 1 have received no portion of their gifts, but I may 7 do so shortly, so in anticipation, i thank the donors of these gifts, 1 moan the gifts of cakes, etc.. I will conclude by hoping what 1 have asked with regards to the intended dance will be carried out. If not. I will, no doubt have a further say on the subject. Yours, etc.. “BLAIN TEA." BAND ROTUNDA. [TO THE EDITOB. J Sir,—The removal of the Band Rotunda from its present situation, where it has been a danger to traffic so long, and of exceedingly little use to either bands or the community, to jonie more suitable and useful position, is a matter for the serious con- i of the citizens and the Bor-
