SOCCER FOOTBALL

ENGLAND BEATS SCOTLAND (by CABLE—PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, April 14. Thirty thousand Scottish lads and lassies, wearing brilliantly-coloured tarn o’ shanters and plaids, and carrying Scottish flags and mascots, invaded London to witness the AngloScottish international Soccer match to-day. London seemed to be ringing with the music of pipers, playing “Hey, Johnny Cope, Are Ye Waukin’ Yet?” There were also the gayest of dance reels in Piccadilly. The Duke of York shook hand's with the teams, being accompanied by'Sii’ Frederick Wall, patron of the game, who was given a tremendous ovation. The occasion was that of his birthday, and appropriately the occasion was made’ of announcing that the Council of the Football Association is presenting to Sir Frederick Wall a grant of £lO,OOO on his retiring next July. The match was played at Wembley, and was attended by 92,963 people, the gate money being £20,178, a record.

The result of the match was a win for England by three goals to nil. England scored theii’ first goal just before the interval. The Scottish team kept England for a. long time on the defensive in the second half. Then the English team broke through, and two goals resulted.

CHRISTCHURCH RESULTS

CHRISTCHURCH, April 14.

The football clubs played friendly matches to-day in warm weather and a strong nor-west wind. In the Association code, the competitions commenced and the results were: Weston 3, beat Rangers 1; Linwood 3 beat St. Albans 1; Nomads 2 beat Tech. Old Boys 0.

TECHNICAL V. GREYMOUTH.

At the Technical School ground on Saturday, the school third-grade team met and defeated Greymouth thirds in a friendly match, ’by four goals to one. A fairly interesting game was witnessed, the play being more even than that suggested by the scores. Greymouth were first to attack, and Mulqueen opened the scoring with a low drive from the right vring. The scores were evened when Vaughan netted from close range, and just on half-time, the same player scored two quick goals, making the score Technical 3, Greymouth 1. On resuming, Roche and Swinburn put in some good work, only for the latter to shoot past when in a good position. Pattinson made a good run on the left to score Technical’s fourth goal from close in. Vaughan, Pattinson and East were the pick of the Technical team, whilst Joe Skeats, Roche and Larking played best for Greymouth.
